I have the opportunity to snag a free 55 gallon storage container from work that was previously used for storing isopropyl alcohol. Is there a way to clean it out to be used in storing RO water or am i crazy for thinking this would work? Thanks for any input.

I wouldn't know without doing the research, but the first thing I would do is research what the alcohol is and does. One of the advantages to isopropyl is that will evaporate quickly, so my inclination would be that it may not be too absorbed but I really would have no idea.

Definitely go under the assumption some will be in there and see what effect it would have.

edit: not sure how much this helps, but did find an article about it (sortof). Based on this article, it sounds to me like if there is any isopropyl in it, it could be extracted with carbon *shrugs*

I personally would use it with a overnight soak in fw and rinse with no concern, but that is me. Worse case scenario, you get a tiny leach of organic carbon.

^^^ This. Or if you really want to "test the waters" get it, fill it up with 10 gallons, then take that water and make a batch up and put some cheap coral in a bucket with that water and observe for a few days. Xenia is a great candidate :)

They are fine. I have 2 that I rinsed out and let them dry. The alcohol will evaporate if you leave the containers sit for a little while anyways.

i've cleaned my mixing bucket with bleach b/f, just rinse it well and leave it in the sun for an hour or two to make sure everything evaporates.

+1. Some people are deliberately putting alcohol in their systems. Much more than you'll have in this container.

+2. After a good rinse, I wouldn't hesitate. Actually that should be one clean container.
