View Full Version : Never owned a VorTech

Let me start off by saying I'm a Tunze guy, always have been. I also however, have been highly intrigued by all the buzz surrounding the VorTech's.

I am contemplating the switch and am wondering a few things. Would 4 MP40W ES's be enough on a 96x48 tank? I was thinking I'd have all 4 on the same end and shooting down the 96" length. The return would be a external Calfo style manifold run by a Barracuda.

Lastly, is there a difference between a brand new MP40W ES and an MP20 upgraded to an MP40W ES via VorTech manufactured parts? I found a person selling this and don't know much about it having never owned VorTech. Again, it's stated that they were MP20's, but had the power supply and driver upgraded with EcoTech parts.

Here is a photo of what's for sale:

Thanks in advance!

I would wait for the MP60 for such a large tank. You could go with two MP60w's to start out, then maybe add an MP40 or two along the back wall of the tank as your coral grows in and needs change.

There is no difference between an MP40w ES new and an MP20 upgraded to an MP40w ES.

When do the MP60's come out? I had actually contemplated that...but figured 4 pumps would be better than only 2. You really think just 2 MP60's would be enough for the tank to start out? I guess the price will be about the same...whichever you think!

And I'm finding discrepencies on the MP60 stats. Is it 5,500gph or 7,500gph?

The flow rate for the MP60w is 7500 gph. Our earlier prototypes were only at 5500 and we'd rather have been conservative at that time versus over-generous! Where are you seeing 5,500 gph?

MP60's should be out by end of year. Again, I'd rather under promise and over-deliver.

I've been researching the pump pretty much all day and have found TONS of places where it's still quoted as 5,500 gph. Even the word on RC is 5,500. There were maybe 1 or 2 people saying 7,500 gph but they had no proof. Hearing it from the horses mouth makes me feel better. lol I'm sure you want to have these sites correct their specs for you so I'll list some that I found:

1) http://www.aquacave.com/vortech-mp60w-esbr-propeller-pump-brby-ecotech-marine-3164.html

"Capable of pushing 5,500/gph, the MP60 offers the smallest in-tank footprint for a commercially available pump." They also state it is available for shipping on 10/31. Is this not a definite then?

2) http://www.saltysupply.com/Ecotech-Marine-Vortech-MP60w-ES-Wireless-Powerhead-p/em1131.htm

"With the smallest in-tank footprint capable of pushing 5,500/gph, the MP60w ES is ideal for larger tanks."

3) http://www.reefthreads.com/?p=176

"The pump moves 2,500 to 5,500 gph using only 10 to 60 W."

4) http://************.com/2010/09/03/vortech-mp60/

"After years of serving the mid and high range of aquarium water pumps, the Vortech MP60 delivers a mind busting 5500 GPH while holding itself up on tanks with glass up to 1.25″ thick."

ah ok. I just wanted to make sure you weren't referring to our website, which does specify 7500 GPH. Once the product is released people will get the flow rate right.

I found them at the auction site. Last time I checked, there was 5 left.

Well I went with your advice Tim and pre-ordered 2 MP60W ES's today with Scott at Aquarium Specialty. I hope they make me as happy as I think they will! But you REALLY think 2 60's will rock an 8'x4' tank huh? You're the boss!

Tim I am surprised that you believe two MP60w will be sufficient for that size tank, I have five MP40w’s in my current tank and I still need to add more. The new MP60w must be an impressive pump, I can’t wait. My current tank is 7’x4’.
