I am still in a debate what to "skin" the stand with. I really don't want the average wood aquarium stand. I would really like to do something with tile, granite, or even stack stone. I just don't want it to come out like an outdoor BBQ or somethin... haha:p

Update:

I got my stand into the garage, and took down some numbers and started cutting some wood. Then purchased some Killz water sealant, and used it generously. I made sure to cover both sides, and all edges around entire piece.
While I was at the HD grabbin the Killz, I picked up some ¾” Styrofoam insulation padding to go under the tank.

When planning out my sump, I was really in a debate where to go to have it made. I have made plenty of “ghetto” sumps with an old 20g, and some baffles but I wanted this to be a blacked out Ferrari sump :)
I decided to go with John from Advanced Acrylics. John has built me quite a few things in the past including my frag tank, 60g custom tank, and much more so I felt confident he could handle this. When I drew up the sketch, I knew it would be some tricky acrylic work.

I also sketched up an ATO container, and a dosing container to hold Cal, Alk, and Mag supplements. Overall, I am extremely happy that I went with Advanced Acrylics. It took about a week for the sump to be completed, and another week for the ATO and Dosing containers. John was in contact with me throughout the process, and even supplied me with pictures throughout.

Update:

I got word that my tank was ready for delivery, so I made plans with Cadlights to get the tank delivered so that I did not risk scratching it while bringing it home myself. It's nice to have the company's show room so close by.
Upon drop off I did a quick once over and everthing appeared to be in good shape. The silicone job was extremely sloppy, as well as the "acrylic" strips along the bottom of the tank. They are there for added strength since its a rimless tank. But they were beat up looking. One of the main reasons I decided against going Bare Bottom.
I left the tank covered in cardboard sitting on my family room floor until I was able to do anything more with it.
About a week later I got my sump, so I started to do a mock up with the tank and sump so that I could start planning the plumbing. I removed the cardboard from the tank, and got my note pad ready for my plumbing list.

I then saw light reflecting off the tank on the outer edge. Upon further inspection I realized there was a chip in the front pane of starphire glass along the 45degree chamfer.
I contacted Cadlights and filled them in with exactly what had happened, and what condition the tank was in. I sent them photos, and told them they can come by to look at it.
The next day I got a response saying that they are not responsible. They inspected it several times before it left their warehouse, and it was in great shape.
About 3 days I was examining the tank again and found a very light scratch that goes around the entire tank about 1-1/4" from the top. It is perfectly parallell to the top edge of the tank. Some of the areas that are scratched still had black silicone in them from when the tank was assembled.
I called Cadlights again, and informed them about everything. Again, they resonded that they are not responsible and basically that it's my problem.
They referred me to a glass shop that could help get the scratches out.
I called the glass shop, and they cannot work on an assembled tank. And even if I disassembled the tank they are not 100% sure they can get it out. The chip- there is nothing they can do.
I informed Cadlights of this and basically begged them to help me out, and do the right thing. I was contacted by the owner and told that they stand behind their employees, and their inspectors. The tank was not scratched when it left their store.

So basically, I am left with my brand new custom starphire tank, with a chip in the front pane, and a scratch that goes around the entire tank. I thought I was buying a quality tank. I was mistaken.

I will never buy from CadLights again.:thumbdown

Since the tank is not going to be fixed I figured I might as well keep my head up, and move on. The average person will never even see the flaws in the tank, but for an owner whos a perfectionist.... I will notice it.

I got the stand into the correct location, and made sure to level it. (using the leveling feet we made, then welded to the stand)

Thanks so much. She is my everything.

I will be running 24 LEDs over the frag section, and 2-250w radiums over the DT.

Water is in Ladies and Gentlemen.........
It's a bit cloudy still but I will take some shots once it clears up.

The Par38 is not above the sump at the moment. Just a random bulb. The Par38 doesn't have nearly the amount of light spread. Much more focused....
Also:
- I will not be running a filter sock
- At the moment it is just a random return pump/heater
- Wiring will be much cleaner....
- Maxijet will be replaced with MP10

Yea it is a real bummer. I really had high hopes for CADlights, but overall I'm extremely unhappy with their customer service. The owner of the company very insulting, and really made the situation worse by pointing fingers.

Either way, I just gotta keep on truckin'

Update:

Well, slowly but surely it is coming along. Rocks, sand, and water have been in for about 3 weeks now. Tested levels a few days ago, and everything looks good so far. My only concern is the amount of rock. I have very little rock in the display, and im worried that:
-I will not have enough real estate for coral
-Fish have very little space to hide

I am going to leave it for now. I will begin to transfer some livestock and equipment this week, so I will post new/better pictures after.

I just placed a nice sized order at reef cleaners for a Clean-up crew, assorted macro algae, and red mangroves.

I also got my Swabbie in last week! The wiper was too short to reach the skimmer neck, so Avast is sending me a larger one free of charge. Justin is great, and makes their Customer Service so easy to deal with. No Hassle. I will post pictures, and review once it's up and running.

Wow, that was fast. Placed the order late friday, and just got it in right now.

http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac20/EnjoyReefin/CUC.jpg

I got a variety of hermits, and an assortment of Cerith, Nassarius, and Nerite snails. Also, got about 7 different types of macro Algae for the fuge and tang feedings as well as 10 red mangroves.
Im not 100% sure how the mangroves will do in this system but, I figured I would give them a shot.

-Well I just had a minor problem with the swabbie.. haha

Basically these are made to fit several skimmers, so when it first arrived the wiper didn't even touch the inside diameter of the skimmer. So I contacted Justin from Avast, and he quickly took note, and they manufactured new wipers to solve the problem.
I recieved my new wiper yesterday, and tried to install it earlier today when uhhhh ohhhh..... I got the old wiper off fine, but while installing the new wiper I was not so lucky. It is a plastic screw that holds the wiper on, and when I got it about 95 percent tightened the head broke right off of the screw. So now I have the wiper not connected, and a broken screw inside the shaft.

I drilled out the plastic screw, and re-tapped it for a 10-32 SHCS. I ordered a 10 pack of Glass embedded nylon SHCS for extra strength. They are not black, but they are much much stronger. Since I had to replace one, I replaced them all.
You can see in the picture:
White screws = New
Black screw = Old

Bottom Line..... Problem Solved:dance:

Yesterday/today I transfered most of the livestock and everything is looking good.
I also acclimated the mangroves, assortment of macro algae, snails, and hermits. But, I'm hoping that the Par38 isn't too much for the mangroves.

Please let me know what you guys think about the aquascape.

The purpose of the swabbie is to keep the inside of the skimmers neck clean. Not the collection cup. Running it a few minutes, a few times a day the neck will never really have a chance to "gunk up". Skimmers always skim better when the neck is clean so it is a smooth transition into the cup.

You can set up an external collection container, or just continue to dump the collection cup.

Example:
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RxrHOSvaWb4&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RxrHOSvaWb4&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Minor update with the LED fixture.

I have it wired to the Apex, and will begin programming this week. I want to try to get a few different settings such as: Daylight/Moonlight/Lightning storm/etc...

I have it all wired up, and ready to rock but before I install just a rugid looking heatsink with wires going everywhere, and meanwell drivers laying on the floor I wanted to make a fixture to house these things.

Sooo.... I am in the process of building my fixture.
Debating between Acrylic, and alluminum.

We are having the interior of our house painted, and a few other things around the home done, so that has really slowed down the build for the last month.
Also, 12hr workdays 6 days a week, and a 1.5yr old daughter, with another on the way = it's hard to find time to work on the tank.

Sadly, my Juvi blueline angel didn't make it. Within 24hrs of recieving him, he had major fin rot. I started treatment immediately but within 2days he was gone. Extremely sad that this fish did not make it, especially when they are decently hard to aquire for a good price. :(

I have finally gotten all of my livestock into the new tank, and everything is getting settled. Still have a lot of corals to mount, which btw is a pain in the butt the bigger they get.
Most of my larger chalices in my DT are bleaching due to the 250w MH and little shade, due to the way the rocks arranged. They will be going into the frag tank down below until some colonies create some shade.

I have an Achilles Tang in QT right now being treated with a medium dose of copper, and im trying to get it to eat more of a variety but these are very finicky fish. We will see how the acclimation process goes. I love this fish.:D

Here are some pics of the new LED housing. Still have to cut holes for fans, and electrical outputs. But, getting closer! (Protective Film still on)

Well currently all of the fish are out of QT, and in the display. Everyone seems to be getting along nicely. I will need to make a screen cover asap, as I fear my wrasses will be carpet surfing one day soon if I don't.
The Achilles seems to be doing better than expected (knock on wood). He is eating like a pig, and swimming all over letting everyone in the tank know, "this is my house". But thankfully he is showing no signs of real aggression.
Also, I will probably be posting some of my chalices up for sale soon, because I really need to get some money to put into the stand, and other random components.

I will be cutting the led housing this weekend, so hopefully I can get a video or at least a few pictures of it in action. I have the fans, and basically everything else to complete the build so I should be able to wrap it up soon.

Thanks to everyone who has commented, and helped on this build. Much appreciated.

Yesterday I got a McCosker's Flasher Wrasse and he has been doing good in QT. Everything else seems to be going good for now. Achilles is healthy and eating like a champ, along with everyone else in the tank.

Lately I have been feeding:

2-(1/2 sheet) Various color nori daily
3-4 NLS/ON pellet feeding daily
1-frozen feeding daily - PE mysis, Rods Food, Oyster Eggs, Fish Eggs, Formula One/Two, and cyclopees.

Fish List as of today:

1 Achilles Tang
1 Yellow Tang
1 Mystery Wrasse
1 Orange Back Fairy Wrasse
1 McCosker's Flasher Wrasse
2 Yellow Corris Wrasse
3 Female Lyretail Anthias
1 Male Lyretail Anthias

Looking into adding a dwarf angel, and a nice clown pair soon...
Thanks for following.

Thank you very much. I was nervous in the beginning that it would be too little rock, but I think it has turned out nicely so far. Thanks again.

if they do.. Plzz on them. so long as the specimens are small and those are the only two you have, you should be fine. be prepared however to have to part with the achilles if he does show signs of lots of pacing. however, as open as your tank is, I think you will be just fine.

I completely agree. I love this fish, and have always wanted one. As soon as I see any signs of discomfort in this tank I will either upgrade or pass it along to a fellow reefer who can supply it with the proper enviornment.

Wow.....For some reason I have not been able to find this thread.

Well, a lot has changed to say the least. About a month after my last update I was on vacation and my skimmer overflowed dumping about 5 cups of thick black skimmate into my tank. When I arrived home 4 days later about 90% of the fish were dead, and the remaining fish did not look good and were showing signs of ich. 4 large SPS colonies had RTN'd, and the only thing looking great were my chalices. I was also dealing with a mild aptasia issue.

I decided it would be best to transfer everything out of this system and clean up some of the corners I had skipped in the past. I transferred the remaining fish to a 90g hospital tank and began treatments. All of the coral was put into the frag tank in the garage, and the entire system was dissasembled.

During this time I finished building the stand, along with the canopy, and lots of other small details. I re-worked the aquascape as the last one was much too tall and limited growth in a lot of areas.

Equipment I have added:

(2) ReefBrite 48" Actinic
(4) LED Moonlights controlled via Apex lunar sim.
(1) Reef Octopus NP Biopellet Reactor
(2) EB8's

Well I got together with Mike (bobafet1) last night, and tried to come up with a rough idea of how to skin the stand/canopy.
I plan on using magnets to secure the panels to the stand for easy removal all the way around. The external cabinet will hold doser, and most electrical equipment.

The front will either be a little lighter, or darker than the sides.
No hinges/handles anywhere.

Rough Idea...

This will hold my doser, power supplies, apex, fish food, etc..I will post some pics once some progress is made.

Very rough sketch....

The sand was dried for a week on a tarp outside and is now in a large container in the garage.
The rock was cooked in 90+ degree RODI water for about a week with no water changes, then it was put outside in the bright sunlight and that is where it sits bleach white. I plan on pressure washing the rock before putting it back into the tank. I also bought a small amount of rock from BRS to try and add some touches to the aquascape.

Here is a crappy pic of where I am at: square 1
http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac20/EnjoyReefin/5d417d5b.jpg

All of the LR has been sitting outside since its hot RODI bath a few weeks ago. I ordered 10 lbs more from BRS just to add some changes to the aquascape. I plan to high pressure powerwash all the rock, then cycle everything in a container with saltwater for at least 2-3weeks, but probably longer.
During that time I will be re-doing most of the plumbing for this system. Adding unions where I should have the first time, and changing the manifold around a bit.

Here are some more pics of the stand. It should be completely done and installed tonight. Side doors will be on hinges, and front doors will be on sliders to allow full access to the sump. No hardware will be visible when the doors are closed.

Anyone have a good idea for changes to my sump?

The center section between the skimmer, and return/fuge was previously a frag section. I am going to keep a seperate frag tank, so there is no longer a need for it.

What can I use it for now?
Where will the system benefit the most?

Algae Turf Scrubber?
Cryptic Zone?
Larger Fuge?

This is the layout for my canopy basically.

2 - Lumenbright Large reflectors
2 - 250w Radiums
2 - Lumatek 250w/400w ballast
1 - EnergyBar 8 - for Apex
2 - ReefBrite LED (or similar)
4 - LED moonlights on Lunar sim

I am planning to mount the ballasts on the top of the canopy, and mount the EnergyBar8 inside/or on top. This way I can hook everything up inside the canopy, and only have 1 or 2 cords to take through the wall, compared to running 6+ cords.

The LED strips are mounted on shelves that I had installed inside the canopy.

I am debating about installing fans. I really want to keep as much light inside the canopy, and stop it from spilling out the front windows of my house. Maybe two fans on top of the canopy blowing towards the ceiling to take hot air up and out....?

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance

I am slowly but surely making progress.
The ReefBrites are mounted in the canopy, and I have my order from cable organizer coming in this week.
I also pulled the rock from the holding tank and started to scape the tank. It will sit dry for a couple days but Im not too worried.
I need to place my plumbing order, but I am still debating the cost of sch80. It seems to be the best choice though, and it will look a lot more professional.

Here are some pictures of the aquascape. I used pond foam to make most of the structures, let it dry for 48 hrs, then I covered all the exposed foam with epoxy and sprikled sand on it while wet. Within 6hrs it was dry and the sand seems to be sticking nicely. It made a big difference in the overall look.

This weekend I finished wiring the canopy, and tried to keep the cords as clean as I could. Both ballasts, EB8, and lunar sim are all mounted on top of the canopy. I still need to run the EB8's cord through the wall.

I also got most of the plumbing finished up. I ended up using Sch40 and painting it all flat black, after masking off all of the valve handles.

Rock, sand, and about 20g of water are in the tank, and I hope to have it filled by this weekend so I can toss the vortechs on and start getting some flow in there. I also picked up some very nice live rock from Clint (Saurus), and will be using that to seed the display once I go through and visually inspect for any pests. Thanks again Clint!

Hopefully I will get some time tonight to take a few pics. Thanks for being patient with me on this loooooong build :D

All the corals look great and I think your aquascaping will look well with grown out pieces on it. I look forward to watching this tank progress.

I'm really debating running 2-250w or 2-400w Radiums. I will probably start out with 250w and then swap to 400w since I already have the 250w bulbs.

Is radium still the best choice when it comes to 400w? I thought I remembered something about each bulb's color temp not being consistant.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, but the worst part of my build was dealing with CADlights haha :D

Last night I had to re-wire my moonlights for the Apex lunar sim. They come pre-wired with I believe 2ft between each LED in parallel.

Like this:
http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac20/EnjoyReefin/708953d9.jpg

I wanted to wire them like this, but I figured they needed to stay parallel with each other.
http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac20/EnjoyReefin/910b017d.jpg

So I ended up just splicing in a few extra feet of wire in between LED's 2 and 3. So now I can put them like I planned with 1 LED in each corner. Well they are about 10 inches in from the sides. I also drilled a hole, and inserted the gromet to run the wires through. I still need to drill the wall and run the wires to hide them, but that should be no biggie.

I got about 60g of water in the tank at this point and have 1 vortech set-up to create some flow. Hopefully it will be full, and I can start the cycle this weekend.

Wish me luck!!

Hey Andrew - thanks for the update. Really nice build and great photos. How do you like your tank dimensions? I want to setup a similar tank but I was going to only make it 18" tall. Do you think that would be a mistake?

Thanks. I love the tanks dimensions, and if I were to change anything it would be to make it an external coast2coast overflow. The depth of 30" really opens up a whole new set of possibilities for aquascaping.

As far as the 18" height, I think it all depends on the style of aquascape you want and the type of corals you plan to keep. Also with a shallow tank it difficult to keep the sand from blowing all over when you try to get a lot of flow. With 2- Mp40w's it was hard to get flow everywhere without blowing sand around as well. Eventually I hope to use 1-MP40w on each end of the tank, and maybe 2-MP20w's on the back of the tank. :D
Good luck with your build, and let me know if you have any other questions. Do you have a builder in mind for your tank? Glass? Acrylic?

I am planning to hook the NP pellet Reactor as soon as water starts to flow through the tank. Is this a good plan, or should I wait to hook it up until after the cycle is complete? I have already purchased ZEObak and will be dosing it once the reactor is online.

Does anyone use this model ReefOctopus Reactor? Any problems with it? All I know is that for such nice build quality they slapped their sticker on sideways and with bubbles throughout it. I took that off, so sadly it won't be representing Reef Octopus.

I know about the pellets clumping, but have heard this reactor creates the best up-flow. Also, are these the best choice for pellets? I just know that these pellets are pure 100% PHA.

Also, I'm assuming I will need a check valve on the input side of this so that when the return pump is shut off pellets dont siphon through the input back into the sumps return area. Any ideas?

Looking forward to seeing your results on the ZeoBak. I've always been interested in trying it out but it seems too complicated for my brain to process. :p

Thanks Tran. I hope the stand design works out well.
I am interested to see the results with the ZEObak as well, so I will post results as they happen. Stay tuned... :)

This tank is the exact dimension that I'm considering... Very well thought out layout, I hope to have a setup like this in the future, hopefully with a fish room or at least closet.

How's that doser working out for ya? What is the approx. cost on those AA dosing chamber and ATO container?

Thank you!

Glass? Acrylic?

Thanks a lot for your input. I was planning on a glass LeeMar tank with an internal overflow. I don't think they do external overflows unfortunately.

Do you have any close up pics of how the slides are attached to your stand?

Are they mounted on the outside or inside? Do you buy the slides in the same length as your door?
I am trying to get the same flush mount look that you have.

Yea, I wish I had room for a fish closet. I am very pleased with the doser so far. All 3 pumps repeat extremely well, and I have not had to mess with it since I set it up - other than to up dosage amounts.
The containers for my ATO and dosing supplements was part of a package deal with my sump so I can't give you an price, but if I was to guess both of them together were around $175.

Thanks a lot for your input. I was planning on a glass LeeMar tank with an internal overflow. I don't think they do external overflows unfortunately.

No problem, and I'm not sure if Leemar does external or not. Either way they build great reliable tanks. Good luck with everything.

I will post pictures soon to show how the doors are attached. The drawer slides need to be the length of the opening you want there to be. I used (2) 24" drawer slides per door. Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions.

[QUOTE=Enjoy;18529088]Anyone have a good idea for changes to my sump?

The center section between the skimmer, and return/fuge was previously a frag section. I am going to keep a seperate frag tank, so there is no longer a need for it.

What can I use it for now?
Where will the system benefit the most?

Algae Turf Scrubber?
Cryptic Zone?
Larger Fuge?

Personally, I would expand the fuge. Also, speaking of which I like how you incorporated that PAR38 spot into the stand and lowered it above the fuge. I too am thinking of going with the PAR38 spot over my fuge setup. Could you provide some insight on how you have it incorporated into the stand/lowered just over the sump ? Feel free to PM me if necessary

I sincerely appreciate that. The canopy really helped minimize the light spill around the house, so that alone was a great benefit. I am very pleased with how it came out. And it is so easily removable/accessable. Thanks again, My build still does not compare to yours :)

Thanks. I still plan to make an external cabinet for Dosing/electrical equipment (Apex, power center, vortech controller, etc..).
The ATO will be located under the stand next to the sump and will use a Tunze Osmolator.

I LOVE the Par38 spotlight over the fuge. I just used some conduit/pipe and ran my wires through that. I believe there is a picture of it somewhere in the beginning of the thread. If I make the center section a larger fuge, I will be adding at least one more Par38. Those bulbs are amazing though. Cheato growth has been great, and its a very concentrated bulb so not too much light spill.

http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac20/EnjoyReefin/88b3d8d8.jpg

Here is the only line coming out of the canopy that needs to go through the wall, down to an outlet and the Apex. Inside this wrap there is the Apex Aquabus cord, Moonlight sim cord, and EB8 Power cord.

http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac20/EnjoyReefin/d6eb3e5e.jpg

I added an extra 3/4" pvc w/ Cap and strapped it to my drain line. This will be my ATO addition pipe. Since my resevior is taller than my sump - if I connect my ATO line to my sump it will siphon the ATO until it is level with my sump (not good). Now I can run the ATO line into this 3/4" PVC w/ Cap which is a few inches above the top of the ATO and avoid any problems. It also helps cut down on splashing/salt creep.

Looks great nice job. Ive had the 4' reefbrights for about a year and they work great. I really like them, but I hear the VHO's are better for PAR and Color. I also have the Lumenbrights and they were also criticized for being to narrow and must be kept at least 14" above water. I have found this to be true. They are like a spotlight in the center. I hear LumenMax is the way to go.

Haha, yea I thought the first pic was pretty sweet ;)

I will probably be adding fans to the stand, as well as the canopy. Nothing too much, just something to keep the air moving and cut down the humidity.
The halides do get hot, but with the suspended canopy in a large room the heat isn't horrible. I plan to keep the tank between 79-80, and haven't had a problem in the past, but only time will tell.

Thanks so much. I am very pleased with the ReefBrites so far. They really have that pop to them compared to even ATI Blue+ bulbs for supplemental lighting options.
I'm really not too concerned with PAR output with the ReefBrites because I'm sure the 250w Radiums will suffice. If not, I can always turn the knob on the ballast and run some 400w bulbs.
I also don't notice spot lighting with (2) Lumenbright Large reflectors. They seem to light the 48x30 footprint nicely. What was the footprint of the tank you had spot lighting with?

I've always gotten the best color and growth with MH compared to T5 and LED. I may have to switch back to MH on my next tank upgrade and build it with a floating canopy likes yours to help reduce heat. I love not having a chiller so if things work out for you, I may have to borrow your design in the future.

Everything is looking killer and I can't wait to see what livestock you'll be adding. Keep up the great work!

I completely agree Tran. I ran an ATI PM 10 bulb on my previous tank and I loved how I could easily adjust color, and the temp stayed cool - but I never go the growth I was looking for, especially with my SPS.
So far with the Radium/ReefBrite set-up I am loving the color I am getting. It's a very crisp white/blue from the Radium and then a subtle yet piercing blue from the ReefBrites.

I really don't even remember where the idea for the floating canopy came from. I knew I wanted to accent the rimless look, but still use large reflectors. I know some others on here have done somthing similar, I just can't remember off the top of my head.
Anywho, I appreciate the comments. Take Care.

Thanks nuccadog!
My only concern with increasing the refugium size is that with the use of NP BioPellets the fuge might not really be needed. I need to re-read about the Duplex sump concept. I have skimmed through that thread before but nothing too substantial as far as research for use.

I purchased the Geist units from McMaster Carr awhile back. They look extremely well built but lack the independent switches per outlet.

Wow...just stumbled into this thread.

Awesome build and what a horrible story to hear about the damage to the tank during the setup...you would think a company would stand behind their tank!!!

It's hard to believe that a few cups of skinmate would kill off the fish and coral inside the tank...being as the skinmate was in the water to begin with.

The new set up looks amazing and so does the skin on the canopy and stand - great work! I'm looking forward to seeing this tank up and running again!

Perhaps you can remove the penductors and shorten the locline? I think the Vortechs will provide ample flow for your tank. Honestly though, when I look at your tank, I'm really drawn to the nice aquascape and don't really notice the loclines.

Thank you! The flow from the Mp40's is great, although with the 30" front to back depth it does allow for some dead spots. At one point I ran three MP40's, but had a really hard time placing them. I will probably be adding a pair of Tunzes or a pair or MP20s to the back wall.
The nice part about the Tunzes is they can be rotated to a number of directions, compared to the Vortech's stationary placement.

Is anyone running Mp20s on the rear wall of their tank? With the 30" depth front to back I think this might be my best bet.

I really do not want powercords going into the rimless tank.

So fresh and so clean!!! Those shelves are beggin' for some SPS

Thanks Tran. I am already trying to plan which sps will go where haha... But man, with the minimalist aquascape it is hard to find a mix between enough light/flow for SPS, but not too much light/flow for chalices on the sand bed. Hopefully some of the colonies will create shade for the chalices to relax in. :)
Thanks again

Well with the algae starting to cover the rocks/sand I decided I better look into ordering some clean up helpers. I have placed orders with ReefCleaners.Org in the past and they always do a great job. Packaging is great, and there are typically more than you paid for.

Here is the list I ordered: (some will go into the current frag tank)

1 Penny Macro Algae
1 Chaeto w/Pods
1 Gracilaria (Refugium and Food Grade )
2 Ulva
10 Blue Leg Hermit Crab
30 Dwarf Cerith
1 Emerald/Ruby Mithrax Crab
10 Empty Hermit Shells
1 Fuzzy Chiton
1 Harlequin Serpent Starfish
5 Nassarius Vibex
10 Zig Zag Periwinkles
1 Reef Pods Copepods

I know eventually I will need a larger crew, but I don't want to overstock the tank with snails/crabs. They will arrive early next week, and hopefully there are very few casualties :)

Thanks for following.

You can angle mp40s or mp60s. If you buy an acrylic block and cut it to the desired angle (will end up looking like a door stop.) Make sure you cut two of them. Now place one on Inside the tank and place the other on the outside. Make sure the thick side is opposite of each other and doesn't exceed the thickness rating of the pump. Now you will have angled flow.

I believe I understand what your saying but don't think it is plausible. I would never be able to angle more than maybe 10degrees without exceeding the thickness rating. With something like a 45degree angle the pump would need to be able to hold through around 2 or more inches. Unless I am missing something.

Thanks the "fish room" is a work in progress. It will really make things nice for QT'ing before livestock goes into the DT. I do not want to deal with pests, and/or Ich again.

The pellets can be ordered in different sizes I believe. I ordered the medium size and they are great for feeding just about anything. I would order the large if I was feeding only fungia, scolys, etc... If your ever in the area let me know and I will toss you some in a ziplock to try them out. I bet your tank would love them. :inlove:

Fish list as of now. These will all be aquired over a long time, and nothing will be rushed. Just coming up with the funds will take some time so that will help with my lack of patience.

3 – Ignitus Anthias (Pseudanthias ignitus)
3 - Bartlett's Anthias (Pseudanthias bartlettorum)
2 – ORA Premium Picasso Percula Clownfish (Amphiprion percula)
1 – Blue Spot Jawfish (Opistognathus rosenblatti)
1 – McCoskers Flasher wrasse (Paracheilinus mccoskeri)
1 – Mystery Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus ocellatus)
1 - Golden Rhomboidalis Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis)
1 - Lineatus Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus lineatus)
2 - Hawaiian Flame Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus jordani)
1 – Achilles Tang (Acanthurus achilles)
1 – Blue Throat Triggerfish (Xanthichthys auromarginatus)

The only fish currently in the QT tank is a mystery wrasse. I really would like to add a rare dwarf angel, or something of the sort. I wish the blue line angel I had would have made the journey.

During the last week of cupramine, I also treat with prazipro for flukes and other worms. Much shorter than going the hypo route which I am pretty sure also does not allow for dual application of prazipro. I would add that if you have a decent quarantine tank and filter you should usually be able to complete this entire treatment without a single water change. You just get your cupramine up to .5 and it holds there steady for the whole period (just make sure to top off) and then later treat once with prazipro.

Need help from the electricians out there.........

I have my canopy suspended from the ceiling, and want to run all of my power cords, etc.... through the wall. The only problem is that the cords will not reach.

Originally I planned to splice them, and just extend the length - but one of my buddies who did electrical for awhile said that if I splice the cord and run it inside the wall it will not be to code.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Cords will need to go into wall about 8' high, down through the wall and exit the wall close to the base board/floor.

Cords:
EB8 power cord
Apex Aquabus
Moonlight dimming cable

The tank has been cycling for 5 weeks now, and all is looking good. Not too big of a cycle, but I have still been feeding a pinch of pellets everyday at least. All diatoms are basically gone, and there is no pest algae in sight. I added about 5lbs of coraline encrusted rock rubble to the display, and have added cheato to the fuge. I plan to let the tank run for 2-3 more weeks, then I will start to add some livestock. Fish will be done with copper treatment this weekend, but I still need to do prazipro for a week.

I lost a lot of my sps this last weekend (mothers day). I came home to one of my frag tanks at a temp of almost 90degrees, and everything looked on the verge of death. Some stuff I was able to save, but sadly a lot of nice pieces are sitting in the coral graveyard. :headwally:

I built a screen top for my tank using BRS 1/4" clear net, and it surprisingly doesn't completely "kill" the rimless look. I will hopefully get some time to take new pics soon.

My overflow does not have a cover, so I purchased some black acrylic and plan to CNC it one of there weekends to match the corners/radius of the overflow.

Later this week I will be receiving my order from gulfliverock.com
Has anyone used this company? Seemed to have some pretty good reviews and the rocks look great in pictures, so I will see.

Well I just received my order from Marine Depot for the Tunze 6058 pumps. I opened the Tunze boxes to find the pumps wet which to me was odd. Also, one of the pumps shroud was in two pieces. I know it can be snapped back together, but It just does not seem like it was packaged properly inside the Tunze box. Then I looked on the UPS box they arrived in and it says Sent From: Returns-Marine Depot.
I really hope I was not sent a used/returned pump. I have sent them an email, and am waiting a response.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does Tunze put some type of lubrication on their pumps before shipping?
Thanks

Looks like all is good. I just received this email -

Thanks for the email. Please rest assured that you did not receive someone else’s returns. All Tunze pumps are factory tested, Silence Pumps and Stream 2 are filled with 5-10ml of a 20% glycerin solution, it is harmless to inhabitants and used to lubricate the pump for the test run, this is a final electrical test before packaging. That is the wetness you are seeing as it was tested at the Tunze warehouse before packaging.

Please rest assured as we have not had any returns on these lately and these are indeed new stock. These pumps do still carry the full manufacturer warranty if you were to have any issues with them. I hope this clarifies things.

I plan on installing both pumps when I get home from work :D

My fish QT tank has a biofilter that was running on my frag tank for 4+ months, heater, powerheads, small light fixture for inspecting fish, lots of black ABS pipe fittings, and black egg crate. I always have a PH, and ammonia alert badge in the tank so at a quick glance I can make sure things are ok. I still test the water almost everyday just to be safe. As long as everything is a-ok, then no water changes are needed. Sometimes I will also add an air-stone w/ pump, but this creates a lot of salt creep.

Got the ATS finished last week, and everything is installed and running. After the first week there is already a heavy dark brown coating on both sides. I turned off the skimmer on my frag tank and want to see if this can replace it.

The picassos have been in the display for about 3 weeks now, and they are still looking great and eating like champs. Fish in QT have 1 week left of Cupramine, then Prazipro, and if all is good - They will be in the display within 2-3 weeks.

One question:
Did you end up putting a check valve on the input side of the pellet reactor?

Thanks so much! The overflow cover was extremely easy (although I do work in a machine shop). I used a CNC mill to cut out the exterior dimensions then just used WeldOn to attach some strips on the bottom so it doesn't slide around. You could get away using a hacksaw even, but I'm sure it would come out better on something like a band saw. And it depends if it will have sharp corners, or need radius put on...? (rounded edges).

Worst comes to worse, send me a template made from cardboard and a sheet of acrylic - and I will cut it for you :D

Thanks! I had no need for a check valve before the reactor. The way the plumbing is set up, when the return is shut down the reactor does not back siphon. So, really there was no need for one. I bought one but never installed it. Plus - I really don't trust them anyways.
Thanks again.

To answer a few questions I recieved through PM:
Dwarf angels are more sensitive to copper, but so far all seems to be going well. The Multibar pair, and Singapore angels have had a decrease in appetite but overall nothing to be too concerned with. I just cannot wait to get them into the display tank :D

The yellow tang is doing much better. Plump again, and living in the frag tank where there is plenty (PLENTY!!) of algae to eat. One thing is, he still shows the white lines on his face. The only thing I can think it to be is HLLE, which I am hoping it is not. Only time will tell.

Here are a few more shots of the ATS system. I took pictures on my cell phone this morning so if you want/need any more of something in particular just let me know.

Water enters here from return pump:

Screen is held into bottom of ¾” Sch40 PVC (with a 1/8” slot cut into the bottom.) It is attached using zip ties, so for cleaning you just – cut zip ties, remove, and clean screen, then reattach using zip ties.

Well I sold the 6085 Tunze Pumps. They were too much direct flow with the footprint of my tank. Anyway that I positioned them they would create a sand storm.
I sold them to some local reefers, and plan to replace them down the road with hopefully two more MP40w's to run on the back wall.

I replaced my return pump on my frag tank as well, so now my ATS has the proper flow rate running through it. I plan to add a splitter and add two more 23w (100w CFL) lights to the system. So instead of one light per side - it will be two per side.

Something like this:
http://images.madeinchina.com/p/955/5080955/E27-Light-Lamp-Bulb-Adapter-Converter-Splitter-SKU_5080955.jpg

The multibar angels are getting along great, and all of the fish are eating like PIGS! During the copper treatment they all had very little appetite, and would just nip at food here, and there. Now it is like a feeding frenzy as soon as I walk up to the tank. All of the fish swim right up to the front glass and pace back and forth awaiting their meal. It is awesome to watch, my wife and kids love it. My 2yr old always points at the BlueThroat Trigger and says "Sharrrrrk". I just smile :lmao:

I took some quick pictures last night of how I ran the canopy's powercord, etc... This is just a Home Theater cover for when you hang your flat screen T.V. on the wall and need somewhere for the cords to go. Originally I planned on going through the wall, but then I was informed it would not be to code. So this was the next best thing, and I thing it came out just fine.

I got my skimmate locker all hooked up. It has a pressure sensor installed in the lid, which uses an air line connected to the power supply, to cut power if the locker gets full. The airline it originally came with is bright baby blue, and it was much too short for my needs. I swapped it out with some clear 1/8th inch tubing, and it works great. Also, the carbon in the lid helps cut down some smell.

Also, I have some type of sponge growing in my sump already. At first I thought it was pest anemone (aptasia, glass) but upon further inspection I realized its actually spreading on the acrylic almost like a spider web. Very interesting.

No big updates, just going along day by day.
SPS still aren't doing too hot, so I sat down today and checked params:

Sg- 1.027
Cal- 430
Alk- 7.8
Po4- .05
No3- undetectable
Mg- 1450

I see that my Po4 has jumped up a little bit due to my heavier feedings, but I don't see any improvement in SPS. Chalices on the other hand seem to be doing alright. Not as good as in the frag tank, but they are surviving. I need to find a solution to this problem so I can get back to having corals grow - not die :D

The only thing I am drawn to point the finger at is the BioPellets. They have allowed me to feed more, and keep Po4,No3 down - but that might have opened up another can of worms...

Onto some good news.... I finally found some Fathead Sunburst Anthias (Indonesia), and placed an order for 4 of them (3 Female, 1 Male), as well as 3 Female Maldives Lyretail Anthias.
They should arrive tomorrow, and they will be put into QT and once feeding is successful I will begin copper treatment.

Hopefully all goes well ;)

Update:

Well I have not updated in a bit, but I have slowly been putting in more work into the tank. I am still having issues with my SPS, while LPS, and my anemone are doing great. Oh yea.. I got an RBTA. I couldn't pass it up - one of the sickest colorations I've seen, and for a great price.

Also, finally got the electrical cabinet finished. Still a few things to tidy up inside, and I still have to add my dosing containers, but you get the idea.

Here are a few pics of it, and some of my SPS that is doing like poo... It seems like low nutrients or high alk because the tips start to just loose flesh. Nothing like bleached tips, or growth. They lose the flesh and then algae begins to grow on the skeleton of the tips. Not cool....:mad2:

Look into the quantity/flow rate of the biopellet system. Based on aforementioned parameters being ideal, I would venture to guess thats whats primarily causing your problems with SPS, especially the loss of tissue.

Also, in the future, with your NO3 being undetectable and your PO4 still moderately high considering your ULNS goals, you could help bring down the PO4 further by raising the NO3 slowly i.e. heavier feedings (with clean/rinsed foods, otherwise your just adding more PO4s), adding a biological filter medium, etc

Thank-you!
As far as I can tell there are zero bite marks, or signs of pests. I have dealt with AEFW, red bugs, etc.... and this does not seem like a pest. This seems like a water quality issue. Thanks again.:D

BioPellets were removed from the system about 1-1/2 months ago. I've seen a large decrease in cyano/algae, but SPS seems to be doing no better than when it was running. I still do about a 10-15% water change every week, carbon has been turned off - nothing is improving with SPS.:angryfire:

Here are a few newer pics. Still having no luck with my SPS. They continue to slowly loose tissue from tips down, until they are dead. I have had some frags for over 3 months and they still look like poo, and don't seem to be heading in any better of a direction.
I took BioPellets offline, Carbon offline, started feeding even more, and I have been keeping a close eye out for pests of any kind. Nothing yet...

Sorry I don't have any good Eye Candy to show... really its pretty depressing

No, I havent. This week I plan to go out and buy all brand new test kits. Hopefully one of my kits is not reading correctly, and then at least I will find the problem. If the new tests read the same as the old (parameters are fine), I will be calling someone else over to test, and give me their opinion.

Hey everyone!

Well, there is a new addition to the tank. I have always wanted one, but I've just never been in the right place, at the right time. It is about 10"-12" long, its coloration is a type white that fades to yellow. Can you guess what it is??

Hawaiian Golden Moray Dwarf Eel :D

Beautiful looking specimen too! It has already found a home under an old ORA Spungodes (sp?) colony. It does move locations from time to time, and he is sneaky as heck when he does it. His head sticks out 90% of the time just people/fish watching. I tried to get a quick picture on my cell phone, but it’s not the best. I will pull out my other camera this weekend and get some better pics.

So last night I hooked up the BioPellets again. They have been off long enough to see that the problem I am having is not caused by them. I cleaned the reactor with RO, and dumped all the pellets into a 5g bucket. I swashed, and swished them around dumping out the water and refilling it every couple minutes.
Im sure it will take some time to get these colonized again, but thats fine. When I have some time I plan to pick up some ZEObak and start dosing this again. My only fear is that Cyano will come back...but we'll see.

Also, I have been running RSCP salt and really haven't seen any positive results from it. The alk being at 12.2 really makes me nervous. If the alk in my tank is 8.4 and the alk straight from the bucket is 12+ everytime I do a water change it is shocking the corals.
So now I grabbed a bucket of AquaVitro Salinity and I will give it a try. I already have 50g mixing in the garage for my next water change. Hopefully my tank will adapt well to the new salt, seeing as these levels are much closer to where I want to keep them.

I almost forgot.... I also modified my Tunze Osmolator. With where I positioned the controller, the cord was not long enough, so the pump could not go all the way to the bottom of the top off container. That means I had to fill up my top off container more often because of the ten gallons I can fit, the pump could only reach six of them.
I had an older osmolator pump laying around, so I hacked the cord in half, and spliced it into the new one I have. This gave the pump an extra 3-4 feet. Now it sits nicely on the bottom of my Top Off container, and it can get to all ten gallons when necessary.

Nothing big, just something I've been needing to do for a long time.

Finally I am keeping some SPS frags alive, and actually getting some growth on some SPS frags. This guy has started to encrust nicely.

It will still be a long journey, but at least I'm heading in the right direction.:D

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic....

Glad to hear! Did you find out what the problem was?

Tip burn was prob due to the alk as he induced previously. Glad you seem to be getting better results with the SPS. I too had problems with alk tip burn at one time, wasn't fun almost losing a pearlberry.

Well, things have slowly started to go back the way they were. Most SPS frags have little to no polyp extension, and are starting to look pale at the tips. A few frags still doing a ok, but not thriving. Now, I've also lost my anemone - closed up for over two weeks, then started to slowly "melt". As soon as I saw signs of it, I pulled it out. :(

The only thing I can think to blame is the BioPellets.
Chalices, and my fungia are doing great and growing nicely so it's wierd that the SPS look nutrient deprived. I would think chalices would start becoming pale and even start receding due to lack of nutrients before SPS would be harmed. But obviously, I am no expert. :headwalls:

On a positive and interesting note, I walked downstairs last night to find the tank cloudy - at first I was extremely concerned because it was very cloudy. When I got closer I could see tiny little eggs floating EVERYWHERE!!! I am talking thousands if not, more! My fish were going crazy swooping on as much as they possibly could. My Mandarin especially.

I could not find what was producing all of this, until I see a small cave in onr of my rock pillars with "smoke" coming out. It seriously looked like a fish bum was living in the cave with a camp fire burnin to stay warm.
It was actually Nerite snails; Almost every Nerite in my tank partnered up with another and began to do this. One snail of each "couple" had some sort of tube (looked similar to a feather duster), coming out from under the shell. It would shoot out large clusters of eggs. The eggs would hit some current and disperse into the cloud that I saw. The other snail in the couple would release the "smoke" - use your imagination. :)

I really wish I would have had my camera to take some photos, but it was at work. If it happens again I will be sure to capture it.

Hope all is well with everyone! I am going in for my back surgery finally, so hopefully in the months following I can spend more time on the tank, and less in PAIN!!

Take care everyone!

I have returned from my back surgery, and everything seems to have gone well. I am still extremely sore, and cannot do much to the tank so I have to ask my wife to help whenever something needs to be done.
She is actually getting the hang of filling the ATO container haha...

On a sad note, I lost my McCoskers wrasse. I had not seen him for a few days so I started the search and resuce attempt. Could not find him in the sump, so I went to check the overflow. And there he is, laying crisp on top of the overflow cover. Between the cover of the overflow, and the screen cover on the tank - but I am extremely surprised he did not shimmy and shake back into the water. He looked as if he just walked out of the tanning salon, since he was so close the the MH.
Frags are still doing alright, but not major changes. Chalices are growing better than ever, so I have been feeding them quite often. Also, my Eel is doing great and is very fun to feed. My daughter loves feeding the Eel with daddy, and everyone that visits our house and watches a feeding gets a kick out of it.

I caught my snails in the act again, and the tank was full of eggs floating around. I ran and grabbed my phone so that I could record a quick video but it's pretty shaky, and blurry. When I get a chance I will upload it to YouTube - Watching the snails you can see "smoke" coming up from the orgy in the middle :love1::inlove:

Hope all is well with everyone, and hopefully I will have some more worth while updates soon. Take care.

How's everyone doing?
Sadly, I have not been vistining the boards as much lately and really just have not had much time for the tank either. Things will change, and I have already started trying to put some effort into the tank.
I have always had great luck with reefkeeping, and growing a variety of corals. The past year has been tough, and it really stops motivating someone to make it better. Lot of work with very little reward.

Anyways..... over the past few months the tank has been hit hard by bubble algae. I have no idea how it made it into the system (surprise, surprise...). I might just have to remove the rock - scrape off as much as I can - rinse and add back to the tank. Luckily I have pillars, so they are much easier to remove (takes about 15mins to get them out).
I just really hate putting unneccesary stress on the fish, inverts, etc...

Hopefully I will have some updated pics sometime soon.
Hope everyone is doing well, take care. :D

I had my new GoPro Hero2 at home for alittle last night, so I figured I would shoot a short vid of the tank. Nothing special, and as you can see it needs a little cleaning ;)

Well I had another "Scrape off as much bubble algae as possible" session. I got a lot of it off so it's not such an eye-sore, but it is near impossible to get it all. I have a feeling it will be an on going battle. I just need to keep the upper hand.

This might put it into perspective - a lot of bubble algae!!

The tank overall is looking better, with the corals coloring up more and more. I will hopefully be adding some new SPS soon :p

Well I received my order from LiveAquaria yesterday, and sadly the fish I was most excited about arrived in a completely clouded bag. Could not even see through to the fish.

Two others made it, but were in pretty rough shape. Seems like more and more, I am having trouble with shipments from LiveAquaria - even if from DiversDen.
I have already emailed them, and will most likely get credited - but I lose the money paid for shipment each time.

Not so happy of a Friday so far.... :hammer:

I finally got a few new sps frags in trade for my BioPellet reactor. I still need to stop by Mike's from SexyCorals because he owes me SPS from a My Miami peice I gave him awhile back - so those will be added soon as well.

I added a really small Bi-Colored Blenny last week who had been in QT for the last few weeks. He is hard to find in the tank, but it's awesome to see him when I do. Perched in the rocks with his tiny head poking out.

A few negatives:
1: One thing I saw this last week, was when I was doing my routine feeding Mr. Blue Jaw (while waiting to be fed) - starts picking at the rocks, then picks at my ORA Spongoid..... Then takes a bite out of it.
Lets just say I will be keeping an extremely close eye on this guy, and if he keeps it up he will be plucked out before he knows what netted him.

2: My Mandarin has some sort of white growth, or possibly a bacterial infection.....I have no clue. I will be posting this in the fish medical forum but figured I would ask for advice here as well. Please let me know if you have any.

Poor little guy...

The Achilles is no longer with me. But personally I think that size tank would only house a juvenille Achilles temporarily. As it gets bigger it would need more space IMHO.
