I'm looking for your FILTER recommendations on a Fish/Invertabrate Aquarium.
I'm planning a 300 gallon tankset up. I'd like to set up a tank, and 55 gallon sump filtration system that (other than regular water changes) maintains it self.

there is really no such thing there will always be maintenance to do. the skimmer (you will need one IMO) will have to be cleaned once a week and detritus will need to be sucked out during water changes but your on the right track going with a sump. you can make a sump out of anything but I guess im not to sure what it is your asking advice on.

I'd like a self-maintaining one too... leaves more time for feeding and watching

I'd say to start get a skimmer rated for at least a 500 gallon system, Dual reactors with carbon and GFO or Bio pellets, a big refugium, maybe a RDSB, and a auto top off with an auto water change system thought and built into it. I don't think any system can be self-maintaining, up to a certain degree. There's always corraline algae to scrape off the glass, detritus to suck up and skimmer collection cups to clean.

Thanks,
I am not seeking to avoid the maintenance work. I' just looking for what others use and have found as a most efficeint system

a sump is less maintanence than anything else, not alot of maintanence but there is some.

Sump seems like dealing with a whole second tank.
