I saw this in my quarantine tank today...

Is it aiptasia?

the stalk is stiff and hardy; they do not retract into the rock when i touch them as I have heard aiptasia usually does.

If I have to, I can nuke the QT but I'd rather not. Please advise!

very similar at the top, but I'm going to say no, those are something else. If you touch it does it retract into a hole int he rock or just into the tube?

Not aptasia.

Look like small feather dusters. I have large colonies of these little dusters in my tank. Great for filtration.

they only retract into the tube.

so is the consensus that the stiff stalk is the tube the feather dusters are in? i have quite a few larger ones in my tank and didn't realize these could be smaller ones.

if i agitate them, they shrink, but the stalk tube stays rigid. sounds like you might be right? i dunno i never see them in the tank even at night

Those are colonial hydroids. They are a real pest and can spread. It's best to eradicate them. Some have had succes with kalk paste - just smear it over the hydroids. You can also remove the rock and douse them with boiling water.

+1 colonial hydroids. In my (very limited) experience, feather dusters don't usually clump together like that.

they were on a pretty small rock with a couple zoas on it. since zoas are dime a dozen, I sacrified the zoas and just dried out the rock. thanks for the input guys! :)

Your Guy at your Lfs is an idiot. They are hydroids as stated above. Kill them if you can.

Your guy at your lfs is wrong. They are hydroids as stated above. Remove if you can.

That's only if you are into those "designer name" corals. Frankly, zoas going for $25+ per head are a complete rip if you ask me.
