I want to upgrade pump on Vertex IN-180 skimmer

I'm having several skimmer overflow problems every month now and would really like to upgrade this guy. The stock pump after about two weeks will just drop its air draw down about ten notches and overflow the body with gallons of water. I tried replacing the impeller, helped for a while but still have issues. I hate having to pull the unit every couple weeks to clean, do I have to do that? So I'm thinking a new, higher quality skimmer pump might be a good idea. I can't swing a Red Dragon or the like but I'm willing to spend a couple hundo if you guys think it'll solve my problem.
