View Full Version : New tank, should I use my old pump?

I am replacing a 90g tank with a 125g. Some of the equipment will be moved to the new tank. One item I haven't decided if I want to replace yet in my return pump. I am using a Mag 9.5 on the 90g which has served me well for many years. Do you think that will be a good fit in the new setup?
Pumps I am thinking of replacing it with are the Eheim 1262 (a bit pricey, but seems to be well loved) or a Marineland Euro Utility 4500. The Marineland will give me a bit more GPH if I need it, and at a good price.
Any opinion on weather the Mag should stay or go, or opinions on the pumps I mentioned would be greatly appreciated.

Eheim's are well loved for a reason... Get one for the new tank and use the Mag9.5 for a water change pump or emergency back up.

My experience is that the Eheim ran cooler and was quieter than the mag. However when I redid my sump I went for a new Waterblaster hy-5000 for my 150g reef. It flows a bit more than the Eheim and uses less power plus seems to run even cooler.

Love my Eheims.

Use the mag if you don't feel like buying a new pump, they are long lived and reliable. I've had my 9.5 running non-stop for 3 years without any issues. When I upgraded my tank I just moved the pump to my pond and it's still running strong.

If you are going to end up buying a new pump though Eheim will not let you down.

Thanks for the input everyone!
The Mag has been running non stop for about 7-8 years. It owes me nothing.
If I have enough left in the budget after picking up all the other bits I need I will get the Eheim and let the Mag enjoy the simple life of a water change pump.
