Yet another buffing acrylic question

I have an acrylic tank and it has alot of scuff marks. When I run my hand through the tank, I can't feel the indentation of the scratches.

Do I need to sand this, or can I just using rubbing compound to get out the scratches? I just purchased 1200-2000 grit sand paper but I don't want to sand down the acrylic if I don't have to.

I am going through this right now but the tank I just got has alot of scratches. If you can run a finger nail and it DOES NOT catch then use the novus system. Works like a champ. hth
