I will be picking up a 65g reef ready tank this week and am wondering what size tank should I be looking at to convert into a sump? Since I will be building the stand I am not in any rush and this will be my winter project. Tank is 36x24x18.

Thanks in advance.

I have a 58 -- same foot print as your 65 -- I have a 20 gallon high as my sump. Given the size of my stand, and the fact I am using an external pump, a 20 high was the perfect fit.

I have a 75 gallon dt and am using a 29 gallon sump. It's about 24 inches wide and 12 deep. You may also want to consider a 20 long as they're about 30 inches long - it just depends what equipment you'd like to put in your sump.

That sounds like what I am looking for, I think. It will have the usual stuff in it - skimmer, pump, heaters. I want to keep some space in the stand for a carbon reactor and maybe other things (not sure what else yet).

The 29 is a little shorter than I'd like - but I had it sitting around so I'm using it. I was able to get the baffles and the silicone for about $35. A great resource for sumps is www.melevsreef.com
