good looking P volitan lion pair, hopefully you've read the lionfish info sheet (http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2002-11/fm/feature/) for your husbandry needs, and if these fish are in a 55 gal tank, expect by july next year- they'll be too big for that tank

no i havent looked at that link but i will now. as for the fish unfortunately yes they are in a 55. hopefully by july of next year they will be in a beautiful 150+ as long as i find one i like for of course the right price. this is honestly my motivation to find a bigger tank because i really want one badly.

Pretty little fish. There's something about a juvie lionfish that is SO appealing. Do give Frank's article a read, there is lots of good info in it.

He also has a super new book just for lion/scorpionfish keepers. It's entitled Lionfish and Other Scorpionfish and it's pretty much the "bible" for Scorpaenformes. Well worth getting as a reference. Go check it out on Amazon.com BTW, the cover of the book is Frank's avatar.

You also might want to check out Tools of the Trade (http://www.lionfishlair.com/feedingtechniques/toolsofthetrade.shtml), which is a nice article on weaning your fish off live foods.

thanks guys and ya i read the link provided and found out alot of good info on feeding them live and dead food. i prefer live so im going to try and mix it up with some guppies and ghost shrimp. im also gonna find some saltwater live food i can feed them whether its online or in a LFS. the thrill of the hunt is what makes me like these fish. plus who doesnt enjoy saying they own venomous fishy's lol

We've had our volitans in 4 setups to date, each progressively larger (6, 24, 60, 100W). They will indeed outgrow your 55, but a full grown volitans is really a sight to see. Plan on two American footballs swimming around in your tank, just to give you a rough size.

IME, they will use as much room as you give them, and spend a lot more time swimming if they aren't cramped.

Be sure to post some pix in the "Show us your lionfish" thread. It is really meant to be an "eye candy" thread.

thanks and yes im gonna take the dead one to the lfs and talk to them and find out what happen the guy who sold it to me is very helpful and isnt about the money or the sale. i dont think they will refund me the money or nothing like that but if i can get answers to if it was already sick or my tank. that would be very helpful

Sorry to hear about the death. I have heard that lions are very sensitive to ammonia. How are your parameter?

they are fine my nitrates are a little elevated but are not that bad. i had the lfs test it and he said it shouldnt of played a huge part in the fish dying.

Sorry to hear about the fish. IME, a lion that dies that soon after acquisition was already sick. I've seen some lions coming in with gill flukes lately, which can certainly kill them, but it could have been a few things. How long did the LFS have them, just outta curiousity?

i dont know how long they had him, but what is gill flukes?

They are monogenic trematodes that infest the gills. One of the first symptoms is labored breathing, and the fish also look "twitchy", as if they want to scratch their gills. Our P. mombassae came in with flukes, and we almost lost it.

the only thing i can say is that his pectorale (SP) fins was twitching when he was sitting still. and his tiger stripes started to fade and disappear.

IME, the twitching is indicative of either body or gill flukes, or some other ectoparasitic infestation. They're apparently pretty uncomfortable, and the fish tend to present this way when infested.

I tend to think gill flukes since lions will usually shed their cuticle in an effort to remove anything on their bodies. Did you notice that the fish was shedding?
