I've had my reef up for about 6 months now. Sumpless 40g breeder with a hang on skimmer and a hang on fuge. I'm noticing that debris is starting to build up in my fuge and around the tank. How have other people found a place to run some filter floss or other mechanical filter on a tank with no overflow? Any ideas appreciated.
Maybe draining my fuge as part of a water change just to get the crap out is my best bet?

I run 2 marineland 400 HOB filters on my 55. I change the filters on alternating weeks so no nitrate buildup.

Can you add a prefilter box to your HOB skimmer? If you want to add a HOB filter my vote would be for an Aquaclear 110.

The Aquaclear filters are very reliable and the 110 would be the size you'd want to go with. I've been running a large Aqueon filter on my 30g sumpless tank for a year or so now. Great filter, but it's kind of loud.

when i used to have no sump, i ran an eheim canister, took out the majority of media that it came with and ran carbon along with a polishing filter in it. i also kept a bit of live rock in there. you have to be vigilant in cleaning. my water was sparkling clear. aquaclear filters are fine too, also have to do weekly maintenance, but the reason i went with the eheim canister is that it is way quieter than an aquaclear.

maybe a dozen blue leg hermits, some astrea snails and some ceriths. The only detritus I have is in the fuge or the water column. The stuff I am looking to get rid of is particles in the water column.

I see. Said particle are ever present then, be it during or even hours after feeding?
