does carbon help get rid of fishy water smell? or whats the trick, is so how do you run it in a sump?

Usually when the water smells fishy, you're having some die-off in the tank or going through a cycle. Mine was pretty smelly and then after our cycle, the only way to smell anything is to stick your face right over the water and even then it just smells like salt water.

well ive been done with the cycle for about three months, i just moved some rock recently to catch a clown, could that trigger anything?

carbon will get rid of the smell. did you empty your skimmer cup lately? that'll smell.

Food that's left on the rim of a tank for awhile can really funk it up. I've seen a few tanks where the hobbyist was extremely messy when it came down to feeding. It was as if they never wiped down the edges before. Yuck!

Agree on carbon. Also check to see if anything jumped out, or died in the tank recently.
