View Full Version : So what do you do when most of your equipment fails in a 36hr period?

First thing, the water level in my fuge got too low because my water line from my RO to a float valve, had gotten pinched closed. So my visitherm stealth heater melted down. Then upon fixing those 2 problems, my float valve fails and runs my top off system for at a minimum of 18 hrs. 110gpd ro, 75 gallon tank, needless to say I had a bit of a salinity issue(1.003), and the ph dropped from a usual of 8.2 in the morning before the lights came on and 8.3 to 8.4 when the lights went off(very stable system) to 7.3. Then after basically starting with a 90% water change to get it back up to 1.024, my skimmer pump impellor disintegrates, and BOTH mh ballasts smoke themselves.... So what do you do? Me, I put 4x 32 65k floros, take out the skimmer and top off and watch my. Octo frogspawn die, my white and green tipped galaxiea, green sinulara, red monti, black and organge brittle star, harlequin brittle, yellow cuccumber, my giant rodactus(sp?) Mushrooms, and not to mention how much more will still die from the stress. All my fish are still great tho.

Reefers are masochists in a way, eh?

holy crap man, sorry to hear about your losses. Have you determined what caused your ballasts to burn up?

If you arnt already, running carbon might help pull out any ammonia from any die off.

good luck man

Yes we are! I am running carbon and poshate sponge in a reactor, and still on the seachem stability regime since I changed almost all of the water and I'm using prime to help out too(tho I hate chemical additives). I went from 500 watts mh to 128 watts of t8s, and no skimmer(can't find a replacement impellor for the older octopus 2000lph pump). I also forgot to mention that during all of this I knocked my refuge light in and burned it up too. Tanks been steady and stable for the whole grow in then all this its kinda deppresing. Guess I gotta start over.

But most of my good sized zoo colonies seem to be alright, and my mushies are doing good(tough little s.o.b.s)

I only hope I don't have the same misfortunes in my second hand 75 I'm putting together

That pic is from a few months ago. Kinda bad. I had to move it from des moines iowa to stlouis mo in january of this year, had to nearly start over then too. Its only been set up again for a few months in the pic, there is way more coraline now and the colonies are bigger.

Holy smokes! Thats crazy. Im sorry for your losses. Maybe you could relocate all your livestock to a friends tank until you get all your equipment back together. Good luck

That is a full shot from a 45 degree angle, I won't put a new one on until I get everything straightened out, its embaressing, this all happened about a week or 2 ago and now with the t8. 65k standard output floros and the chemistry issues that I'm still working on, it looks yellow and I have had a massive gha out break that I can't get control of.

That's an incredibly bad day: so sorry to hear! Don't toss any skeletal remains on lps: it can sometimes recover. I had a brain dead for over a year, maybe two, that has now produced a new brain. Just keep it back in the rockwork.

Tomorrow's got to be better.

Wow. Sorry to hear about your tank. You must have angered the gods somehow. Don't give up though. Use it as a learning experience (float valves can't be trusted).

I sure hope so, the 2 polys of octo frogspawn in the right middle of the tank split into 5 polyps since then.
