I just got this skimmer and I am having trouble finding a manuel for setting up the skimmer. I found a picture of the unit on the web. It shows the gate valve discharge 2/3 up the side of the cylinder. What i got has the gate valve 1/3 up the side. My sump is 14" deep and I would like the slimmer to be in the water as deep as possible. Will it affect the proformance of the unit if I extend the discharge futher up the side so the water level is 2/3 up cylindrical part of the skimmer?

You really only want the skimmer sitting in about 8-9" of water, most skimmers perform best that way. You want the foam to rise on it's own accord, not with the help of water pressure behind it.

davebar - I have the same skimmer, and like you I couldn't find a manual. I did find on reefspeciality.com their product information indicated 5.75" water depth. I have mine sitting pretty close to that depth. You may want to start there and work your way up or down depending on your skimmer performance.

Actually modifiying the stand pipe is a great option but doing it to sit the skimmer deeper in the water could hurt its performance.
I always modify the standpipe but do so to limit the amount the gate valve needs closing. If you have to close the valve a lot to get the right water height in the skimmer it becomes more unstable when you feed IME.
