I have been experiencing some patches of red slime algae on my gravel bed lately. Just wondering if phosphate or nitrate is generally the cause?
thanks
Jeff

Yes Jeff it is plus water flow-not enough is often a contibutor as well.

I guess what I meant was is the red slime caused more by higher phosphate or higher nitrate? I am not sure whether to concentrate on a phos problem or a nitrate issue. Flow shouldnt be much of an issue, I have 3 mp40s and my return pump in my 180 for flow.
thanks

Jeff both phosphate and nitrate need to be lowered. They are both food for the bacteria. Removing or reducing one will not wipe out the bacteria or keep it in check. Not sure whether you have a sump or not but if you do you could add Chaeto to help pull both from the water column but will need to light the sump for the Chaeto.

Old bulbs is also a contributor, chemiclean red slime remover works great as a tool for temporary removal. Just remember to turn your skimmer off.

all the above advice is correct and yes flow is usually a contributor as it is almost impossible to grow it in high flow areas so flow certainly makes a difference .
