I'm thinking of getting one for my new tank that I'll be getting in a few months.
Do Maxi Minis normally stay in the sand, or are they rock-dwellers too? I would have 95W LEDs, so I don't think they would be climbing for light.

I think they are mostly rock dwellers. That is why many people put them on isolated rock islands in the sand so that they don't cross over to the main rock work. That is what I am doing.

I have never heard of clowns hosting maxi-minis. I have about a dozen and my clowns would rather host in my candy canes.

I was curious. I can they can get very colorful. My wifes tank is small those would be a good alternative if they would host.

I've gotten all of mine semi-locally, mostly in Tallahassee and Pensacola. There aren't many, but I make frequent trips to LFS's and get lucky sometimes. :D

jt milstead - Minicarpets will eat a clown. NOT a host nem. Somewhere in one of these "mini" threads is a pic of a nice platnum occy getting swallowed.

I highly doubt a maxi-mini could eat a clown, even a small one. If you can find the pic please post it.

They won't host clowns, but they will host shrimp. I've had a Periclemenes brevicarpalis in one since I put the anemone in the tank. He moved out of a rock anemone.
Nice pics Sam. and you are likely right. I don't see a clown getting eaten, but he might get stung and killed. Might. Certainly none of the other fish in my tank go even close to them.

 Ok well. . . I searched for a little while, and cant remember the exact thread(there are a lot on RC)but found a lot of posts saying the same. Then I found this pretty quickly just googleing for maxi's eating fish:

I googled the same thing and came up with the same image after reading your post. I read the thread and it's actually a target mandarin being eaten. I did some more research and found that there are a few other cases of maxi's eating fish, but the fish are usually sick or dieing when they are eaten. I think it's probably a lot like other "reef safe" anemones in that they will eat fish if they get the opportunity because the fish is either slow, sick, or small. I know that I have a lot of maxi's in both of my tanks, and both tanks have tiny gobies and clowns. I haven't had any fish go missing, but I might just be lucky. :D

In my opinion it's a risk worth taking. And the odds that a maxi-mini is going to eat a healthy fish are pretty slim IMO.

Me to. I was just answering the guys question. . . I should have added "IMO". I am not an authority on maxi mini husbandry.

I wish there was more available information on maxi-mini's. Most of the stuff I know is just from experience or learning from other reefer's experiences.

Reef Gardner in Florida has them, but they are not cheap!

I'd like to throw this out about common names. They've been called mini-maxi carpets for quite a while, but since the name is unwieldy, others are looking for something else to call them. Somehow, Stichodactyla tapetum doesn't seem to roll off the tongue very easily so the name pizza anemone has been tossed about. Sorry, but that name is taken by Cryptodendrum adhaesivum, and it is more appropriate since it has three types of tentacles, one of which is thicker and along the outer edge, resulting in a "pizza crust" shape to the anemones. They are also somewhat larger, more of a fish eater, and much more difficult to raise. Definitely a species tank kind of anemone, unlike our mini-maxi's!
Just saying.

I got to see the stinging power of my maxi last night. My largest anemone (4-5 inches) had one of my many serpent stars hanging out of it's mouth. These are the local kind that are about four inches arm to arm. I thought it was dead, but I saw that the two arms that were out of the mouth were trying to get away. Evetually the maxi won and took four of the five arms. After seeing that I see where a careless fish could get caught. Just thought it was interesting, and I'm glad I got to see it happen.

Sam, can you give me/us the name of the LFS that is your supplier?

Sure, these are the places I have found them.

Tallahassee: High Tide

Pensacola: Innerarity Reefs, Reef Scapes, and Water World

None of them get them regularly, but if you check often you can usually find one or two hiding with the ricordia's :clown: I've found about half of mine that way.

I love that article! That's one of the best sources for info on these anemones. Reef Goddess (Morgan Mok) is one of the few people that is an expert on maxi-mini's.

And yes, pizza anemones are much different than maxi-mini's, pizza anemones will eat all your fish.

I just started collecting these. I have 5 of them already. There all over south florida LFS. Almost every one i stop in seems to have them now. Most of mine are about $25 but i have been looking for a bluish coloration on one, which seem to be much harder to find. I also like them because of how easily you can reproduce them (by cutting)

How large are these typically? I have seen them at the LFS that are about the diameter of somewhere between a baseball and a softball. I got one with an online order but it was only the size of a quarter.

*Late post. Here's mine not centered on the Mini but I wanted to share all the same. It's blue-greyish in color and has tripled since I purchased it. On another note this is the culprit for 2 emerald crabs, 2 porcelain crabs, and 1 peppermint shrimp going missing.
