hi,

couple of basic and probably stupid questions. helping my neighbor setup a tank. due to his wife, most likely will go with the JBJ 28G LED as wife nixed the 90G tank.

We are in southeast florida so I'm assuming LED's are the best bet for no chiller needed. Do we even need a heater?

Light output should be good to grow anything in this tank?

Finally, if we go with the JBJ protein skimmer, does that work okay? cost is an issue here. 650 for the tank is already a bit of money, probably be at 1000 or so by the time we add rock, fish, etc. Can't afford a 200 dollar skimmer.

thanks in advance.

I can give an opinion on the skimmer, the one that comes with it is ok and better than nothing. Use that skimmer and weekly or bi weekly water changes should be ok. I ran my tank with no skimmer for a couple years and just did more frequenty water changes. I recently purchased a eshopps skimmer for $110 for my 28 gallon NC and it is awesome. I have the HQI lighting and do not know much about LED's.

sorry bro, but usually the only skimmers that actually work are the ones you have to spend on. consistent water changes are the best form of maintenance if you'd rather not spend.

i've read a number of people having good results with 50 dollar skimmers, I think they have air bubbles though as a problem. I don't have more than around 50 to spend on a skimmer, simple as that. its actually going to be my neighbors tank so I should say he doesn't have more than 50 dollars to spend, and we need a skimmer. water changes will be done as frequently as possible, but knowing him, probably not as frequently as will be needed without a skimmer.

this one has been doing ok for the people who have used it. i wouldn't know. skimmers were never something i skimped on. atb for my large display and a wm h2 for my smaller. i can tell you money invested in a good skimmer will blow a cheaper skimmer out of the water any day, but if your budget won't allow it, then a mediocre skimmer is better than none. skimmers can always be upgraded in the future anyways.
