So I usually keep my reef tank around 1.024 SG. My problem started when my protein skimmer leaked, at the time I didn't realize and associated the water loss with evap. I added fresh water to correct and was fine until I realized that my protein skimmer was leaking water. So in about 24 hours or less my SG went from 1.024 to about 1.017. I am adding salt slowly back in. All of my corals closed. Will the coral be okay? I also noticed that my snails seemed stunned.

The corals and snails might survive. It's hard to be sure, but many reefs get rain storms that drop the SG drastically, so the animals might have some adaptability.

I agree with jonathan, but to add to his post I would raise the sg. slowly maybe .01 a day till you get it bact up to your normal level.

I would bring it back up slowly over the course of about 48 hours. I would not want the coral to sit in salinity that low any longer than they have to but dont want to shock them any more than they have been already. I think a couple points in the morning and the evening for 2 days and you will be ok

Okay thanks, a couple snails died, but no great loss there. A few corals opened some and I did start to bring it back up. Hopefully by tomorrow everything will be okay.

I would add 1.026 salt water instead of top off until the levels are back to normal. Nice and slow.
