I need some advice on cooling fans. I want to use four fans in a closed canopy for a 180g tank. I would like them to push somewhere around 50-70CFM and be dead silent. Any suggestions? Which type of fan can you plug directly into a 110 wall plug? I always get them confused. Thanks for the input!

Sorry don't know of any that run dead silent. I just went through this same problem and ended up with 12 volt fans and a power adapter. I bought 4 12volt computer fans that push about 80cfm at 21dbs each. They really are quite and are doing a great job and I'm into them with the adapter for less than $100. When I checked the 110volt fans were going to cost about $60-$80 each off of eBay and they were not rated as quite.
These are the ones I used:

most of the 120vac muffin fans I found a little more noisier than the 12vdc. Using a 120mm Gelid (64cfm/21dB) wired onto a wall-wart adapter I had around (but similar new at Radioshack ~$10).

Amazing how quiet.

Thanks das75! What a great fan. I have never seen one that is waterproof before. That should come in handy. Are there any ac-dc converters out there you could plug 4 fans into?

Haven't seen those but they seem to be a little noisy. Sure do push a lot of air though.

Noctua case fans are dead silent; I accidently stuck my finger in mine and set it slightly off balance which I'm a wee bit thankful for because now if I listen I can hear if its on which is comforting with a 250mh in less than 3cf.

I would use regular 12v dc fans. Check out newegg.com. They have some fans that move >90cfm and at <20db.

Came across this the other day on the forums

If I were to put one in my canopy this would be it since it looks nice and comes as a complete package

Noctua fans seems like the best bet. They come with a six year warranty and I don't have to by a converter. Thanks for the input everyone!
