Hey there, I recently purchased a used 200DD tank and was in the market for a good skimmer that could handle a good amount of bioload. I came across a clearance sale for the Reef Octopus Extreme 250 powered by 2 Sicce 2500 pumps, rated for 250 gallons for $325 down from $499. I thought this was a great deal and snagged it.

After some more research I am wondering if I should have went with the newer Reef Super Reef Internal 3000 for $399, powered by the newer Bubbleblaster pumps.

My budget is $400 or less...did I make a smart call saving a few bucks and getting the clearance skimmer or did I make a mistake? Anyone had experience with the Octopus Extreme 250?

Thanks so much!!

There's been a few posts on this skimmer in relation to upgrading/purchasing new pumps. You should be fine for now. Eventually you may start noticing start up issues with these pumps. It seems to be a common flaw. Until then, I woudln't worry. When they do start to give you problems, start looking in to a bubble blaster pump. You can retrofit a single bubble blaster on this skimmer in the future.

You'll be fine. If you think about the performance that these skimmers put out now as compared to 10 years ago, it's amazing. My advice is to use the skimmer and upgrade if needed. I think you'll be fine. Second guessing yourself is a recipe for heartache and an empty wallet.

nothing wrong with your skimmer. you can always upgrade the wheel and volute of the low output octopus SICCE wheel and volute for little money and some have put BB on the skimmer and plugged up the second intake port. I think its fine as is though. there's always going to be something newer and better. few years ago that skimmer was all the rave.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I think you all have convinced me to keep the Extreme 250 for now and use the extra money saved on other items I need to buy.

By chance would any Extreme 250 owners be able to chime in and let me know if they like them?

Thanks again!
