OK, so I just set up a tank (24" cube) that had the sides siliconed with Black GE Silicone II . If I remember correctly Silicone I was supposed to be used. So what is "bad" with Silicone II ? Anything I need to be testing for ?

Did you use this for a structural bond? It's not going to hold together if you did.

II has a type of mold junk that leaches out. I don't think you can test for it though. but in time will kill off the inverts and corals

No the old seam was nicked up from someone using a razor blade to clean the glass . It was just used on the 4 sides over the original Silicone.

It has been up for 9 days since I transfered my 10g tank and contents over .
Things looked bad at first but after 2-13g water changes I hope it's getting better. I did loose a clown and a Starfish and 2 snails but my cleaner Shrimp is fine so far.

i would still suggest removing that silicone and replaceing it with GE I or you may keep running into problems. from what I have read it will continue to leach out over time

That is not what I wanted to hear!

What about my live rock and sand?

look at the packaging...if it mentions anything in fine print about antimicrobial/antifungal additive, it shouldn't be in an aquarium. Your silicone should read 100% silicone and make no mention of microbial resistance.

Sorry, :sad2:

...and BTW, they'll all read "not for aquarium use". By that they mean that it isn't intended for structural purposes.

new caulk will not adhere to old caulk. You would have to scrap off all of the caulk before applying new caulk.

It is 100% Silicone but it says "provides mold free product protection"

Still reading the tube.

"provides mold free product protection"

that is the problem right there, your rocks and sand will prob. be ok but I would get it out asap

I was just looking at a tube of Silicone I and it says "cured sealant resists mold and mildew" Is this the stuff I need to use ?

you want the GE I windows and doors not the bathroom kitchen

Ok this is the deal I need to know 1000% for sure Silicone II is a REAL bad thing and is going to kill corals/verts.

I have talked to my guy and he is going to get aquariums in the morning for his shop and he can get me a new one Tomorrow! This way I dont have to wait for silicone to dry to set the tank back up.

do a search on here. there are lots of people that had problems with type II

I searched days ago but I was looking for silicone 11 not silicone II.

So after searching I am going to buy a new tank .:sad2:

Can I reuse the sand ? should it be rinsed ?

I also made the baffles in the sump with Kitchen & Bath silicone I so I guess it needs to be redone too

it's hard to say, I think you will be ok. you said you didn't have it running long correct? if so you should be fine using the rock and sand but keep an eye on everything.

wouldn't hurt to run some polyfilter either

yeah anything you used that stuff on will have to be taken out, cleaned and redone.

Ok, so I called GE today and the lady told me that with SiliconeII she GUARANTEED me that my fish would be dead in 2 days!

So I got a brand new 24" reef ready cube tank today and have another tank set up to use until I get the new tank online .

I was also sold some GE SCS2000 Silicone for the old tank . Is this what I need?
