an 18hr power outage...
last night in the rain, i guess some transformers EXPLODED a block away... it was loud, bright and pretty epic... but the damage was a power outage for half of the city... (my city is 4 squared miles LOL) so this happened at 10PM or so... i don't remember... whatever... so i called the edison and stuff, and they said, yeah, something happened... whatever... then they said that they couldn't send anyone out because it's hazardous because of the rain... wtfail...? what about the commercials about edison working on light poles in hurricanes...? is that all fake...¿ man i hate people... anyways... i waited for like two hours so i can watch the tank in case the power comes back on... but after scott pilgrim vs the world ended on my laptop, i crashed out...
so i wake up at 8AM or so... still nothing... man... ten freaken hours of no heat or flow in my system... usually when stuff like this happens, we get the power back in a couple of hours... i was surprised... i called the edison again, and they said that it should've been fixed at 6AM, but they encountered more problems... what a bunch of fayts... so jose (BGjoe) went to go get a generator... i was like, well que sera, sera... but we went to get a geny... on the way over there, we saw that one of the tops of the power pole was cracked or hanging by a single cable... i also heard that the top part of another pole landed on a car... dramaaaaaaaaaa...
so we call them up, and they said that we'll get power back at 3.30PM or so... man... that sucked... so i went to the back to finish my chicken coop/run and lost track of time... i heard my sister's and neighbor's yell, and i knew the power came back on... it came on at 4.30PM i think... i know it was after 4...
i looked at my tank and the water was a bit cloudy... the skimmer was on the fritz... i had to empty out the cup because it was over flowing... i guess it was reacting to the cold water...? i dunno... so i had to tweek that up a bit... i'm still keeping my eye on it... when i first turned on my lights, i noticed some of my LPS were looking all beat up... man... that sucked... but now that i look again, everything looks normal... besides the cloudy water... but srsly... none of my corals look stressed or anything... that's a trip... i thought for sure all of my LPS would die... even my fish are fine... talk about hardy...
whatev'skeez...
that's my story... i srsly need to get a generator.. i'll keep my eyes opened on craigslist... lu lu lu...
so... should i do like a water change..? i think i'm going to get fresh carbon mañana... hopefully my skimmer stops tripping soon... it's still has a bad case of the fail/aids... would i get a bacteria bloom from cold water...? or the stagnant waters...?
peace...

Yea that sucks when power goes out.. i need a generator too LOL
you should get a back up power supply. probably won't last 18 hours, but definitely keep your heaters and powerheads running for a few hours during the usual blackout.
well wadiyah know! I got one for sale! LOL

craigslist has some deals... the one jose got was like 6 bills for a 4500W~ one...
check this one out... 2096254436
wait... can i post craigslist links..? meh, i'll take it down... LOL... type in the number on the search box...
i don't want to spend that much cash on one either... maybe two bills max... i also just need it for the tank (heater, return pump, skimmer), lizard heat pads/bulbs, roach colonies and maybe the fridge and phone...
how many watts would i need...? 5,000W...?¿¿¿¿

LOL... i'm gonna get yelled at...
i don't have a thermometer... http://www.socalireefs.com/forums/images/smilies/ahhhhh.gif
but jose's water got to 70 degrees or less... he got the generator at 10am or so... so my water didn't get heated until 4pm i tells ya...
you could probably get away with 3 or 4,000. I have a real small 3,000watt generator that I use for camping. We play xbox360 on my 32" LCD with a 12,000BTU portable A/C unit. I'm sure that would run my entire tank and fridge plus more. One fill up lasts about 4 hours.

my neighbor busted out with an itty bitty gen that he got for camping... who takes a tv camping...? srsly..? what's wrong with you people...
LOL...
sorry... but it kind of makes me think of the wall-E generation... all of the fat people sitting around saying they're doing all kinds of activities wile sitting on their chairs... that really grinds my fixed gears...
LOL well its not really camping. it's playing airsoft doing military simulations. We camp at the AO between operations. Me and my buddies started bringing my xbox and tv to pass the time.

I think most things survive short time periods with low temps. Just like when they ship fish overnight its about 16-24 hours for the fish & coral with no temp control.

I went through the same thing when a transformer blew up a block away from me, honestly one of the loudest noises ive ever heard in my life. Hopefully everything survives without any problems!

I have a UPS Battery backup that runs my return pump only. I tested it one day when I was bored and it ran for over 12 hrs. I got tired of hearing the beeping noise I plugged it back in.
Glad nothing died on you.

thx... it's only a yellow tang, rock blenny(hate him), flame hawkfish, and pair of naked clowns... the only one that can suffer from ick is the tang... but i haven't had ick in my tank for 3 years... maybe they don't exists in my water column...??
but srsly speaking... if my clowns die, i think i will quit the hobby for a couple of years...

thx... but transformers always blow up over here... but it's usually because some drunk truck driver's hit the poles and such... but this time i think 4 of them blew up... but it's not really that loud... it just sounds like a bunch of deep rolling bass and insanely bright 20K light... but not really that loud... i think my 4th of july fireworks were louder than that blast...

thx... i see how a battery back up will be beneficial, but i have too many stuff... and to have the ability to power my fridge will be awesome too... and my laptop... and my neighbors wireless modem... LOL...

Knuckleheads :blown:...what would Macguyver do? Lost power last week for 10 hours and had to think outside the glass box, no battery back up or generator necessary if your home and have a couple 12vdc-110vac inverters, two cordless 18v batteries and a charger, alligator clips, knife or wire strippers, etc. and don't forget to include some common sense when working with power around the tank. Used 1 18v battery to power a Tunze 6025 and a 200w heater in my 48 x 30 x 20 while I charged the other one in my truck. A single charge ran both pieces for over 2 hours!!(DeWalt 18v-- Cheapies/Home Owner model Ryobi, B&D, etc cordless batteries won't last nearly as long)

I think justin credible had said you could actually use Hydrogen Peroxide to oxygenate your water if all power is out and you dont have power backup- it would be a cheap and easy solution to make sure your fish can breathe-!

Lasts longer than the standard UPS while using just one charged 18v battery, add a quick charger, another battery and utilize another inverter for your vehicle and you'll never run out of juice to keep temp, flow and O2 while waiting on Edison.

EL OH EL!!!!!!!...
that's tight kid... but i didn't sweat it much because i'm not overstocked on fish... but i didn't know about the peroxide... i have a bottle of that stuff on top of my canopy... i should've thrown some in the sump and tank... good to know...
if worst came to worst, i would've gone to get some battery powered bubblers and heated up some saltwater and RO on the stove to keep the temp stable...

The lady on the phone is confused. We don't work maintenance in the rain. If its a emergency or power outage we work it rain snow sleet hail etc. Most likely the crew that was assigned to you grid was out working a hazard already. You'd be surprised how many cars hit power poles when it rains. We had 6 downed poles due to car accidents and 1 pot malfunction just Sunday night in my area. Hope all your livestock is ok

If anybody is ever in this situation, I have UPS units for loan. I'm actually selling two of the, but I'm also keeping two for myself.
Gumbii hermano, I'm a call away - next time ring me up and I can have two fully charged ups unit that will run your heater and a pump no problem. Although let's hope there isn't a next time, but this stuff happens when you least expect it.
Cool story nonetheless, I love the spanglish thrown in there.
