If it is a male or female, bad pic, but I couldn't put the bag at a different angle and hold the camera at the same time. Thanks in advance.

I'd guess a female. But Im by no means an expert.

I've been told males have two extra sticks after the last set of legs. I have a male peacock.

Nice looking mantis:celeb2:

Thanks, yeah I'm still confused on the mantis anatomy, I see a lot of "sticks" on this mantis  I would guess that too, but it's not a great pic.

The first two pics are the most promising but because of the low resolution when I zoom in I can't tell. Telling male from female is very simple if you have a good view of the underside. Last pair of walking legs there will be either two sticks (male) or two dots (female) behind them. There's another thread below this one with a great front shot of a chiragra where you can see the sticks hanging down. Also if you are still having trouble, there is a video on you tube titled "mantis shrimps impressions" by Timmy that shows his male L. mac (zebra mantis shrimp) proudly displaying his equipment for all to behold around the two minute mark.

Is it normal for the mantis to not close up at night? It has made a home under my brain coral, but I can still se it at night constantly staring out at me.

maybe it's an odontodactylus thing? my o.scyllarus never closes up, even when molting.

Mine hasn't killed any hermits either. The only time I've saw it strike anything is when I caught it with the net and it was only once. It did take a krill for a minute then threw it out. That was two days ago then tonight I tried again with the head, it took it then threw it out, then I gave it the body and it just sat tree by it until I moved away and started eating it. Maybe it's freshly molted and that's why it hasn't really struck anything? Still adjusting to it's surroundings perhaps?

as roy always says, mantis shrimp will almost never starve. there is much greater risk of overfeeding than under. he may be taking out little critters at night which you are not aware of. feed no more than 2-3 times per week

Hopefully it'll warm up to me soon. It's a cool little creature.

Some more pics, as close as I could get underneath right now, I'm thinking it's a female, but I still don't know.
