View Full Version : Waterflow required to go through sump?

I am in the process of designing my 110 Gal stock tank with 55 gal sump setup. I will be using a bunch of airlifts to provide many thousands of gallons of water flow in the tank and sump, but for a return pump, I only have a mag 7. I really don't want to have to spend more money on a larger pump if I don't absolutely need it.

I plan to have a refugium with various macroalgae and pods and other critters along with a dsb.

Is 300-500ish gph from my mag7 enough water exchange between tank and sump?

Thanks in advance. I hope to start my build thread with my plans with some (crappy)drawings today. I hope people will critique it and help me make it right!

I subscribe to the slower throughout the sump is better philosophy, but others disagree. I would think your Mag 7 will be fine as a return pump. That should give you 4-5x through the sump.

I use a Mag 9.5 on my system but it is throttled back 15% or so.

I agree with what Indy said.

I usually run close to 10X, but the vast majority turn over about 5-6 times the DT per hour.

it will be fine for sure .

As the grun said, a lot run about 4-5 time volume but others run about 10. I use a Mag 7 dialed back on my 75 gallon DT but would leave yours wide open and seems it would be fine. GL!
