We have a sponge filter that is a rectangular block about 4"x4"x12" in our refugium in the third compartment next to the sump. Water from the compartment with the mud/sand/live rock and seaweed flow into this as well as the return flow from the protein skimmer. Obviously, it gets dirty. What is the best way to clean it as I would think that you want to keep some of the bacteria in it?

Use some tank water in a bucket to rinse it then flush the dirty water.

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't understand the point of keeping it in there at all.
