will a catalina 2200 pump work as a return pump for a sump i have a 75 gal display tank and plan on using a 20 gal sump tank

Two considerations:

1. Overflow rate – you don’t want to pump more water then your overflow can handle.

2. Headloss – calculate head loss to assure you are getting the flow you need. Here’s the RC Head Loss calculator (http://reefcentral.com/index.php/head-loss-calculator).



The Catalina’s head loss drops off pretty quickly. Might want something with a little more flow (again, dependent on number 1, above).

Like red stated above the first consideration should be the overflow box. If the overflow box is small and you are not able to get a turnover rate of 4-5+ then you might need to consider something else. I have a 75 gallon and use a Mag 7 and figure I get ~450 GPH turnover which is ideal. That's a turnover of ~7 and works well for me.
