Okay so my tank has been running for 5 weeks and at the end of my cycle i noticed a bit of algae growing from my live rock. I assumed that it is GHA but now im not sure. I has a fern look to it. I am going to post some pictures of it later as i need to borrow a good camera to get a close up.

if I can i will try to describe it the best I can. Some pieces are pretty long about 4 to 5 inches long and have a fern look to it, which makes me think that it is Bryopsis, however after doing some research online it seems that bryopsis is very dark and has more defined stalks then what i have in my tank. What I have is very pale green like GHA.

My questions are does anyone have experience with Bryopsis? Does it grow on the sand and the glass as well, Or does it just stick to the live rocks?

My goal is to get to my LFS to get a Mg test kit and a Mg booster if it is bryopsis so i can get rid of it. Also I have to pick up a phosphate test kit today because I am not sure where it is at.

I do ONLY use RO/DI water which is reading at 0.00ppm

When my tank first cycled I had something similar which looked like bryopsis. Several members posted that I needed to remove my rocks and get the algae off. Well it died off after week 6 or 7 during the cycle and never came back.

I did have a bryopsis outbreak about a two months later though and I overcame that with Tech M and raising my mag to 1700. My bryopsis was only on the rock but I have critters that keep the sand clean and I clean my glass every day so I am not sure if Bryopsis will grow on sand and glass.

eww.. Definitely looks like Bryopsis.

I used tech M as have many people on the forum. You have to add quite a bit to get the Mag to 1700. For a 65 gallon, I would reccomend buying a gallon from Amazon. You will probably only need half as it took my 120 a full gallon but it can't hurt to have some on hand afterwards. I bought an extra gallon to keep in my closet in case it ever shows again.

Thank you Rvanano i figured that it was bryopsis too but i just wanted to double check before i took off to the LFS to get some stuff to get rid of it.

I wouldn't buy Tech M from an LFS unless you want to pay a ton for a small quantity. I have never seen an LFS carry it in more than 32 oz bottles. Our LFS sold 16 oz (IIRC) for $10 less than a gallon will cost on Amazon. And I went through the small bottle in a week with no real rise in Mag.
