Alkalinity and KH are different terms for the same thing

KH is measured in degrees - so numbers of 8, 9, 10 or 8.2. 9.6. etc are recorded when testing using a KH test kit

Alkalinity is measured in milligramme equivelents per litre Meq/L
and numbers like 3. 3.2. 3.4 etc are the result of tests using those type of kits

to convert a KH reading into an Alk reading - you just divide the KH result by 2.8
thus if 9.6 was you KH 9.6 divided 2.8 = 3.42 Alk

Thanks. Just wonder why Salifert has two test bottles in their test kits.

1 for kh
1 for alkalinity

They only explain how to test for kh and no explanation for the alk. test.:blown:

Sorry
the other bottle is a sample of water/fluid with 7.5 DKH +/_ 0.3

you use this to check your test kit

run a test with that solution and check your test kit reads between 7.2 and 7.8

if it does - then your test kit is accurate ( providing the test solution is )

What Steve said.

That solution (check solution) allows to run a check. If the deviation is too large, either the kit has gone bad, the check solution has gone bad or it is a user error. Regardless, it allows to notice if something is wrong with the testing.

The actual value of the check solution varies per batch and is printed on the label.

Alk is ppm 10,20,30,40,50,60, and so on so you take 9.6 x 17.9 = 171.84 so alk is 170
