Is there any sort of dye that one can safely put in their tank that would help expose dead spots??

I have never heard of anything, but that isn't to say there's not. Kinda interested now maybe someone who knows for sure will chime in.

This question could definitely be something to draw a lot of interest in The Reef Chemistry Forum.

I had a "purple up" type additive that would do it. Just about any supplement that clouds your water will accomplish it.. and be fairly safe as long as you don't over do it.

I used some kind of permanganate on my freshwater tanks years ago. It was a Jungle brand product and made dark purple clouds in the water. That's all I remember.

What about food coloring? Nontoxic to people, anybody know anything about the same for fish/corals?

I would be careful there--red number 40 has been known to make kids go nuts.

Blow air bubbles into the intakes of your powerheads. That will give you a good idea what their range is
