I have a pair of clowns, 8 weeks no problems... Since yesterday one of them is up by the overflow with tail in trying to swim out, so I thought I'd moved it which I did a few times and just keeps going back. Now he's swimming around though the back of his tail is missing like it was sucked off. Why would he do this? and will it grow back?

Likely one bit it off, unless there's an impeller in there he could stick his tail in. If a tail or fin still has the cartilage near the base it can regrow.

It is most likely NOT going to grow back. There is too much damage at the caudal peduncle. I've seen fish that have had their tail fin removed for what ever reason and the area was mostly healed over and the fish seemed fine. The ones I've seen have been predatory fish as well as prey species.
