If the hole is only 1" I don't know of any bulkhead that will fit it.
If the hole is 1-1/8" you need 1/2" bulkhead and pipe etc.

You might be able to fit 1/2" hardware in an 1" hole, but it would be tight if it dies work. Just out of curiousity are you really asking what size hole you need for 1" hardware or do you already have a 1" hole in the tank and wanting hardware to fit in the 1" hole. In other words can you give us a little more information on why and what you are using it for.
