View Full Version : Frag tank build

Well I finally broke down and decided to have a frag tank. I bought this from a local getting out of the hobby, the dimensions are 24" x 16" x 8". I am going to light it with my old 250W MH/PC hood, and it will be plumbed to my main tank (150G Cube w. 40G sump) This should make it much easier since my dosing pumps/heater/skimmer will all be shared by the same sump. You will see in the pics I built a light rack that will hold my MH, and a basic stand. I was just going to put a piece of plywood on top, but walking through Lowes I found this pre-made laminate top. I thought it would look nicer and give me a little work space for fragging.

250w is going to fry that stuff unless it's 24" above the water, lol

Doubt it, my LFS has 400w halides over their raceway frag tanks and that water is only 6" deep.

Yeah what he said :spin1:, got the light up today but I had a leak on the water test on my return line. I took it apart and changed a few things and will be doing another water test tomorrow. Here is the light:

It looks good, but when funds become available I would scale down the lighting a bit. Down to a 150 HQI or something. Having a well lit work space is great, but its not very efficient. I do really like your frag tank, wish I could of found some of those locally.

Thanks Stupes, your right it is not the most efficient but I had this fixture already so it was an easy fix for now. I may buy a used T-5 setup to put on this tank. I got it up and running yesterday & will post some pics later.

I moved everything over buy I need to get rid of most of the live rock that came with the tank since it takes up to much real estate. It is still kind of a mess but I plan on keeping SPS on one side and the acans, softies and zoas on the other.

Looks nice! What are you doing for additional flow & how much flow thru the overflow?
Also how long are you lighting & how high? I am looking to use a 250w MH but on a 36 x 30 x 10

Thanks guys, I run probably like 300 gph fed from a quietone 3000 from my sump. Once I get rid of my extra rock and move out some of the softies I have a small powerhead (probably 150 gph) I will probably add over my SPS section. For the MH it hangs about 24" from bottom of the tank to the bottom of the fixture. I run it about 7 hours a day, but I am looking at getting the possibility of getting an LED fixture like this: http://reefkoi.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=20&products_id=840
I have been watching the reviews on these to see if it is worth it.

i do wanna mention one thing and its just precaution
when you plumb your frag tank into your main system if either one of them crash for some reason. you will lose everything
just a little something to think about

The very reason a frag tank should be ran as a separate system....IMO
I would hate to wipe out a multi thousand dollar system because of $10-$20 dollar frag.
