I could not name the original books when I started the hobby ~3 years ago but most of my beginner advice was attained online. Below is my favorite book on coral and husbandry and I hung onto this one.

I have read tons of books on this hobby and this is my favorite! It gives a lot of great info on many different subjects from setting up a tank to the different types or fish and is very well written for the beginner.

This book is a must have!

I've always heard this is a great book. It's been at least a year since I read a SW book. I've been in the hobby for ~3 years but still will read if its fruitful...Would this book be good read for an 'intermediate'?

It's a terrific reference book for beginners to experts. I've had this book for 8 years and go back to it all the time when I have questions. It's by far the best one I've read that covers a wide variety of things. It goes into a good amount of detail without overwhelming.

+1

This should be required reading before you are allowed to add water.

Natural Reef Aquariums (http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Reef-Aquariums-Simplified-Approaches/dp/1890087009) by Tullock is basically the same book geared toward the reef hobby. They even use some of the same pictures.

I've read and recommend them both.

Reef Invertebrates by Anthony Calfo & Robert Fenner is a good read. The majority of it is about the invertebrates we see/keep in our aquariums, but the first 141 pages or so talks about "living filters." Live rock, live sand, DSB, refugiums, etc. How to incorporate these things and make them work. Also, there is a really good section on the different types of algae we sometimes encounter in our tanks.
A book well worth the price IMO...
