Hey Jeremy,

Any word on the new double cone?

Thanks,

Jeremy B.
01/28/2011, 08:19 AM
I have received pricing on them......

180 - $1100
200 - $1300
250 - $1550

It's not definite when, or even if, they will become available in North American market yet outside of special ordering. There are more details that still need to be worked out at this time.

Thanks,
Jeremy

There are three models (180, 200, and 250) in the Bubble King Double cone lineup with each of these skimmers being powered by a direct Mini Red Dragon pump (which is similar to the mini red dragon pump 1500) utilizing a 100mm solid 3D pump head. The Double Cone Bubble King 180 is for aquariums up to 500 liters with adjustable 400-700 liters of air power and retails for 735€ ($990). Expect these new Bubble Kings to be offered in Europe within the next few weeks and shipments have already been planned for the US.

The neck diameters look smaller judging by the pictures. I guess we have to wait until more info is released.

Jeremy B.
01/29/2011, 11:13 AM
Just another note about the new cone, this is actually not a "double cone", but just a single wine glass body cone skimmer. The only double cone that Royal Exclusiv makes is the Super Marin which came out in '07.

What's the difference between these and the Alpha's?

hirez

Yeah, one can wonder, cause the difference is perhaps only in the price.

Jeremy B.

The new Bubble King cone has a wine glass shaped body, smaller neck, and a pump to match that smaller neck = less air draw and water flow.

RobertK
02/01/2011, 12:58 PM
How would that be an improvement over the previous model if there is less air draw and water flow?

pencil3
02/01/2011, 02:08 PM
I don't believe there is a "previous model", this is more like a new product line.

How would that be an improvement over the previous model if there is less air draw and water flow?

rkaires

How would that be an improvement over the previous model if there is less air draw and water flow?

It would improve performance on systems with lower levels of organics. It will enable it to still build a foam head.

RobertK
02/02/2011, 08:31 AM
Thank you, rkaires. What would the new design's effect be on a system with higher levels of organics?

rkaires
02/02/2011, 09:28 AM
It would just produce more foam.:)

RobertK
02/02/2011, 11:38 AM
More foam = more organics removal than a comparable skimmer (alpha 170) w/ a wider neck?

02/02/2011, 07:45 PM
More foam = more organics removal than a comparable skimmer (alpha 170) w/ a wider neck?

correct.

rkaires
02/03/2011, 06:55 AM
I agree. Case in point, I have a ATB 1050A and a KZ M. The ATB has a 4.7" neck with 45scfh of air and the KZ has a 3.5" neck with 40 scfh of air. The KZ produces as much if not more skimmate than the ATB on the same system.

I think the new BK cones will preform better than the Alpha's.

Jeremy B.
02/03/2011, 09:15 AM
More foam does equal more organics, however a bigger neck or smaller neck on a skimmer doesn't make a bit of difference. It's all relative to the amount of air draw the skimmer has in conjunction with the size of the neck it's pushing up into.

Without knowing the air draw on these new cones we can't say for sure if they will indeed create more foam than the Alpha's or not.

would the 180 be enough for a 210g tank?

RobertK
02/12/2011, 02:51 PM
Click the link in Jeremy's post - the 180 is rated up to 130 gallons. I think you'd want the 200.

Jeremy B.
02/15/2011, 10:41 AM
Keep in mind these are pretty conservative ratings from the manuf. I would trust the 180 up to about 200g, depending on stock load.

Would want to know how it compares to the expensive supermarines...
these seem better priced somehow..

Luxo
02/21/2011, 12:17 AM
I saw these in Germany, they are really small. The reaction chamber is much smaller than Alpha or even minis maybe. Hence the smaller tank rating.
I would stick to Alpha or ATB.
Also the air draw is much less.

Jeremy B.
02/21/2011, 08:14 AM
The air draw being less is not that big of an issue, as it has a smaller neck to match that. The Alpha's have much higher air draw, but they also have a much larger neck.

The Super Marin is still the top performer in my opinion, it's going to be hard to beat that skimmer.

hirez
02/23/2011, 04:44 PM
m just noticed that they have supermarines better priced than bubble king.
Whats up with this? theres a rd 2000 in the 250 supermarines, but its still cheaper than a buble king. The double cone uses a rd 1500 so it even though neck is smaller, its still pretty good pumps...
For a 250 gallon, which of these would be best (with a little room to upgrade of course..)

Which means a lot cheaper for me to get supermariens in Eu anyway :)

Jeremy B.

Correct, they are two different designs made by the same manufacturer. In my opinion the Super Marin is the best performing skimmer on the market.

Hi Jeremy!

Sorry my friend, but I get confused here. :spin1:

As you said:
Correct, they are two different designs made by the same manufacturer. In my opinion the Super Marin is the best performing skimmer on the market.

Is Super Marin superior in performance? Why?

Alpha 250.... The 300 models are too big, not matter which model line you look at, and the Alpha 250 will be cheaper than the BK Cone 250, giving you more bang for the buck.

Thinking about a setup with 800g what is the best option?
- Bubble King Super Marin 300 with Red Dragon II; or
- Vertex Cone Alpha 300

Please, don't consider the costs, just performance and your personal experience.

And a dumb question, is it SuperMarin or Supermarine and is it comes with Red Dragon OR Red Dragon II? Is it an optional?

Here's the picture of the Bubble King Supermarin or Supermarin 300, right?
http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/6933/bubblekingsupermarin300.png

Jeremy B.
03/22/2011, 07:47 AM
If cost is not of a concern then in my opinion I would go with the Super Marin. I think the Super Marin is the strongest pinwheel / venturi skimmer available on the market. That is a photo of the SM300 you posted.

Jeremy B.

There was just a big shipment of BK skimmers that arrived in North America last week. That is nothing more than just a rumor. However, I can tell you that I am unsure if the new BK cone will come to North America or not though. There just isn't any demand for that particular skimmer over here.

OliverM3

I have to say I have been interested in the cone for a while so I thought what the heck.
I found that I could order the 250 directly from Germany for less than buying one in the US. http://www.sewatec.de/index.php
They were great for around $1350 I picked up the 250 cone in about a week.
I had forgotten to specify 110v but they caught it before shipping my order.

Wow is all I can say this thing is massive!
I'm replacing a BK mini 160 that I've been waiting to replace.
It started out on my 76 gallon with a tiny under the stand sump.
Now I have the 76, 100 gallon frag tank, 40 gallon macro tank and 100g sump. The mini was still doing great but I knew it was time for an upgrade.
Especially since I want to upgrade the display and perhaps add something in the office.

Within 3 minutes this skimmer was already building a foam head. I'm impressed! Even with a new skimmer and the plastic toat lid I needed to put in the sump to make the stand big enough to support the bigger footprint.
I'll need to figure out a more permanent solution but this will do for now.

The screw on collection cup I'm still unsure of. I do like the BK mini style that's a snug fit cup but we'll see.

I still need to tweak it because it's running wide open so I'll post some picks after a few days but here are some from today.

Once again this proves you just can't go wrong with a BK I don't care if it costs more there's something to be said for set it and forget it.
I have enough work to do with the tank I don't need a finicky skimmer.

Looks great, keep us posted on how it works for you.

Thanks Jeremy,
So far so good it's skimming great the throat seems to stay cleaner. I don't know if it's just the size compared to my Mini 160 but the chunks of skimmate that would build up in the throat of the 160 are being pushed into the cup with the 250 cone.

I did mess up a little with the Mini 160. I can't believe a bleach and water soak caused some crazing on my 160's collection cup inner ring.
It still works fine and doesn't leak or seep. But now I have to blow it out for next to nothing on ebay since it's not as pretty as it once was. :headwallblue:

Oh well live and learn do not use bleach or even hot water on acrylic.

OliverM3
10/02/2011, 07:05 PM
Everything is working out great I'll definitely recommend the cone to my friends the recovery time after feeding or major work like me changing 50% of my substrate is faster than my bk mini.
I do like the cup that lifts off of the mini better than the screw on cup but other than that the 250 cone performs much better than my mini 160.
This is about at day of running.

The price of them here in the states will make them a hard sell compared to the Alpha's. The Mini's fill a niche that the Alpha, Super Marin, and Delux model does not fill - compact design. Having said that, I think they're a great skimmer, and looks wise one of the coolest ones available on the market. :)

I don't know if I could get the water level up that high I'm about 3/4's of the way up and I'm already skimming super wet.
as for the pump I've screwed out the restricter for the pump all the way out.
I still haven't found any reason to restrict the air going in to the pump.

I haven't really played around with it though it's running nice wide open.

My sump water level is abt 21.5cm. I've adjusted the water level at the resonator level. The white knob is turn anticlkwise 1 round from fully clkwise position.
I read from a chinese website and it mentioned the white knob is to control air water ration, but it didn't mention much about clkwise will have more air less water.
However, looking at the bottom compartment of the skimmer, white knob in anticlkwise position will see an increase of air bubbles. I guess white knob in anticlkwise will have more air less water.

I find that with the white knob in anticlkwise position, skimate is more wet, in clkwise is more dry.

Is the vertex alpha skimmer that bulk reef supply sells the same as BK double cone?

Jeremy B.
03/25/2013, 07:06 AM
The BK Double Cone is different from the Alpha you're seeing on that site. The Alpha's are a straight cone, while the Double Cone (not really a double cone at all), is just a wine glass body shape.

Bubble King Double Cone 200 with Reef Dragon 3 speedy pump.

Ordered Feb 28th, got it April 8th and it was worth the wait!
Runs like a dream. I gave it a 2 hour water/vinegar run and rinsed off. Put it in the sump and dialed it in. It arrived in perfect shape. I love the control on the RD3 Speedy. It shows % power when you adjust it, then watts continuously after. I'm running at 28 watts (max 50) and wedge pipe wide open. Great control of foam level just by adjusting pump.
I may have a live video feed of it here: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/higgyreef

Klaus, I don't see the Double Cone 170 on your website. I only see the 180. Who are the distributors here in the US for the Double cone 170 with RD3 and what is the price?

Thanks

Jeremy: Any idea of the prices for the dreambox sumps (along with the skimmer & return pump)?

Jeremy B.
04/23/2013, 03:12 PM
DreamBox sumps will not be a reality just yet in North America unless you're willing to the large freight cost of shipping one on a pallet by itself via air freight to the US. I can tell you when we brought in a Bubble King 650 External for a customer a couple of years ago it was around $500 - $600, so figure freight on the DreamBox would be just a little bit under that. You can then check out the DreamBox sumps on www.royalexclusiv.net and multiply the cost of the sump by the average current exchange rate of 1.3 and you'll have the price in US dollars.

Thanks

I've just ordered the double cone 180 with the rd3 speedy. I'm interested to know what positive effects the upgraded pump has on this skimmer. I was restricted to this skimmer because of size and just hope it can handle my 500 litre sps system?

Jeremy B.

I have yet to run an RD3 Speedy powered skimmer, or a Double Cone at that, so I'm not going to be much help until we get our first ones in here.

My system is about 570L and is heavily stocked (IMO), I have the Double Cone 200 with the RD3 Speedy pump. I am currently running it at 1/2 power with the wedge cut in a little. I'm sure I could have ran just as well with the 180 but dicided to go larger in case I upgrade my tank someday. Jeremy,

What is the price going to be for the 200 DK with RD3 pump? What does availability look like ? My time frame is end of June beginning of July. I think I need the 200 over the 180 because I will be running a 120g with 30g sump (actual water) heavy bio-load and SPS dominate tank. What do you think?

Thanks

Jeremy B.
05/17/2013, 09:06 AM
As soon as they land I will have pricing on them, probably a week and a half from now. I would suggest sticking with the 180 (7" body), instead of the 200 (8" body). An 8" body on a tank that is under 160ish gallons display wise is just too much in my opinion.

Pseudo69
05/17/2013, 03:36 PM
The 180 says good for tanks up to 500L which is 132g. Will it be able to handle the load?

Jeremy B.
05/20/2013, 07:14 AM
Yes, the 180 will go up to 160g or so with no problem at all, that's with a heavy load.

Good stuff I should be ordering this week, but do you have replacement pumps and impellers for them, I have owned my mini 200 for like 3 or 4 years now, and had one pump fail early on, thx fully I was able to replace it with a laguna 1500... I don't think I can do it this time with the dc pump...

Also no more supermarine 250? Just double cone? How about the deluxe?

Jeremy B.
06/17/2013, 07:23 AM
We do not at this time, however we can have parts in from Royal-Exclusiv in a matter of days now, no longer weeks like it was before. And that includes all parts for any skimmer.

thelostrican

Which way to go i am torn between the supermarine 250 or the double cone...
Supermarine for me the best skimmers period. Can put a laguna in there...
Or the new double cone with dc pump...

Which way would you go for 240 or so of water...

Jeremy B.
06/17/2013, 01:32 PM
I'm assuming this is a 180g display? There's no way I'd go with a 250 series skimmer on that, which is a 10" body. Stick with an 8" body - 200 series, either way you go. You'll be much happier with the performance it will be more than enough to handle your system.

Super Marin's are awesome, but I think I'd lean towards the Double Cone 200 with the DC pump.

thelostrican

18p dt+40 frag tank+40 sump. You prefer the doble coneany particular reason...

Jeremy B.
06/17/2013, 02:49 PM
I'm really liking the new DC pump, which is why I'm leaning that way. The Super Marin is still one beast of a skimmer though! Definitely stick with the 8" body though, 10" body is going to end up giving you spotty performance.

Hi Jeremy,

My name is Khanh, from Vietnam.

My display tank: 900 liters + sump: 180 liters with heavy stock. I can run with Buble King Double Cone 200 + RD3 speedy?

Someone told me must run double volume that manufacturer recommend. Is that right?

Can I buy things from Premium Aquatics with my debit card but shipping address in US?

Thanks in advance

Hi Khanh, for your size system a 200 series Bubble King is exactly what I would suggest. The RD3 powered Double Cone 200 would be a perfect setup for this system.

Figured I'd follow-up.
2 years just flew by since buying the 250.
Still running great!
This really is a set it and forget it skimmer.
I haven't had to touch it in two years I just clean it once a week.

This hobby really gives new meaning to you get what you paid for.
Everything I've splurged on which seemed so much higher priced than anything else has really taken my tank to a whole new level.
