in the past two mounths my tank has developed a type of alge that is brown and stringy, i could not id it so i start with my water quitly.

ph 8.3
pos. undetectable
no2. 0
no4. 0
cal. 480
mag. 1380
alk. 9
i used a seachem test kit

so i kicked up my water changes to once a week, by the way i have a 40 breeder with a 6 bulb t5ho and two vortech mp10. since doing the changes in water it has slowed down but not gone away so i put some posgard in my sump and that did nothing, so last week i decided to us this stuff called antired that a friend of my told me about, so i did and it went away, but two weeks latter its back.
any idea's on what i can do.

even if that works i still need to find the soures of the problem or it will keep coming back, at first i thougth it meet be because i was feeding to much so i cut it back to every other day with rods, i know it not my flow in the tank. the only thing i could think it is, i got a flew pounds of dryed up base rock from a friend that was get out of the hobby, do you think it mite be lichening pos. out into my tank and how can it test for that.

cyano is harmless. Just ugly. Just turn your lights out 3 days a month for several months, with a good skimmer, and you'll beat it.

I dont' think its cyano, I thiink its dinoflaggelates - they come w/high phospates and don't be fooled by the test kit. PO is taken up quickly by everything and just because its not detectable does not mean there's no PO.

Does the stuff look stringy, snotty, brown and full of air bubbles? if so, get yourself a big can of GFO and use it for at least several weeks (changing it every four or five days) eventually you'll beat it.

if my rock is releasing PO will it finely tank out or will i have to remove it, really dont wont to have to do that since its at the bottom of the tank.

Thank you...I thought I was the only one around here who thought that cyano is harmless...hey, if it's fine with the Baltimore Aquarium, I ain't gonna worry about it!
