SPS about 13 square inches per LED.

Softies only 15 sqin per LED.

Fish only 20 sqin per LED.

Your tank has 4' x 12"/' x 2' x 12"/' = 1,152 sqin of surface area.

It's going to depend on what LEDs you use and what you run them at. I'm using 84 XR-E half royal blue and half clear white at 700ma. This is more than enough for my 120g and you could easily get away with less. If you're using them at a lower current or more efficient LEDs you may need more or less respectively.

Come'on. That means 1,152 / 13 = 88

So round that up or down.

Frankly, I'd do exactly what super1man suggests.

IMO, if you want even coverage over the tank, go to the higher end. I have 96 and like the coverage I have. You may decide with XP-Gs you can make fewer work, but unless you hang them higher than I have mine i think coverage will suffer.

I am doing the same build, and was going between 48 and 60, but leaning to the 60 side. Depending on your heatsink layout you can always add more, but was planning ot be one of the first to try the XM-L's
