If you are using sodium carbonate (Randy's recipe #1) then you are adding around 1 dKH of alk each day, which is not uncommon.

If you use recipe #2, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), then you are using about half that amount or 0.5 dKH per day. ;)

based on the reef calculator, for 150 gallons total, to be dosing 10oz (1 cup = 8 oz plus one quater = 2 oz), means your tank is consuming 20ppm ca and 3 dkh alk each day. so yes, that does look like a lot.

try measuring your alk and ca, then do not dose anything for 24 hours. measure alk and ca, then do not dose again for 24 hours, then measure alk and ca again. take the average, then use the reef calculator to figure out how much 2 part you need to dose per day given the amount of consumption.

im using sodium bicarbonate.so its around the normal ya think.and thanks for taking the time for this.my alk is around 6 in the morning before dosing thats why i had to increase it form 1 cup to 1 1/4 .i hope its nothing bad.

ok, for recipe 2, that would be ca consumption of 10ppm and 1.5dkh of alk.
perhaps normal. lps use some ca and alk also.

btw, recipe 1 is twice stronger solution, so you will use half that amount you are currently dosing.

i am noticing some calcium percipitant build up in my sump, on the sides and bottom. but i tested my mag and although my test kit goes to 1200 my test results show higher.could it be my mag . .the test kit i have is a seachem reef status mag. and as i was testing the color didnt change ,showing me that it is higher then 1200 is that enough.

you dose the alk and ca part separately and in high flow area? (meaning you did not pour them both in at the same time and close together).

as for testing mag, you may be able to double the test water volume, so your result will be half the actual value.

the seachem kit once you use one full syringe (1250) you can refill the syringe and keep adding. I believe you add 125 for every .1, each line in between is 12.

my syringe was empty and the color was still more than 1200.i started with a full syringe.

yes the 2 parts are dosed seperatly through the day.hours apart from 1 another.

yes that is normal, you can then refill it.

d0ughb0y,

Thanks for the corrections. I guess I plugged the wrong figures into the calculator, since I used it for calculations. ;)

I agree that 1.5 dKH per day isn't all that much. If I was worried, I'd check the pumps and heaters for signs of precipitation. If the magnesium is above 1200 ppm, it's definitely not the problem.
