I am getting my new JBJ 28g LED nano cube set up. I don't have a sump to grow macro algae and so I began to wonder how people prefer to manage macro algae in their nano cubes. (I do see that you can convert one of the little filter compartments into a little refugium but is that really enough space for enough macro algae to suck up the nitrates?

And then I saw a random post about phosphages and gfo. I don't even know what gfo is, but are there any sumpless nano cube solutions for controlling phosphates?

Thanks.

gfo = granular ferrous oxide

It helps with phosphate removal. With a small tank I would just manage it with water changes.

I don't have a nanocube, just a cube, but I run GFO (granular ferric oxide) in a HOB filter. You can grow some macro in one of your back chambers, but it will require a light, and frequent pruning. To place some GFO in one of the chambers, you'll need to put it into a media bag.
