I have never been a fan of hermit crabs. But mine love to set on the Monapora Caps and apparently eat them. The coral is fine, the Crab camps out for the day and the polyps are gone. A nasty bare spot that soon becomes a home for algae. The bare spots rarely grow back.

Is this a common problem?? Thanks. R

If crabs don't get fed, they eat what they can find.

This.

Also it's possible he's not actually eating it, rather picking stuff off of it. I've had the unfortunate event of a piece of food falling in my corals before and of course the crabs went ape trying to get at it, which kinda looks like they are eating the coral.
