hello!

this is going to be a online journal(somewhat) of the build and progress of my ADA 120-p overflow. i have had a few reefs over the years and learned alot from this forum and others. i have never done a build journal for any of them... and figured i might as well do one for this tank. some of my favorite reads on this forum are build threads! i think its fascinating how much thought and effort people will put into our little "eco-systems". i sold my last reef to a friend of mine a couple years ago. good or bad this will be a fresh start as i have nothing to transfer over.

this tank has the first drops of water going in it as i speak. so the pictures and post will be caught up as i go. i have been collecting equipment and building things for this set-up for the past 6 months or so. i will try and keep things in order but... you know how that goes!lol

first part of any build is to select a tank size! i went back and forth on this for weeks. i live in a smaller house and didnt want the tank to overpower my space. i decided on a 4ft tank or a 120cm(not gallons:) ) next up was manufacture. i thought about building my own for about 5 seconds... haha! but remembered how much of a pita that was. so i nixed that idea and started getting qoutes from the usual vendors. in the end i went with ADA! i have had other ADA tanks and was never dissapointed. frank and jeff over at ADG have great customer service! and i feel like i will get support if i ever need it.

anyway, enough rambling! i will get on to a couple pictures. most of these are quick phone pics as they were taken @ the moment. i would like to get some high quality pics together once everything is up and going. here is a picture of the tank when i got it.

now that i had the tank in my possesion i could get started on the stand! while i do admire a well done stand with a bunch of decorative trim. its just not my style... i like clean lines! simple basic no frill's. and IMO theres nothing more basic/simple than a plywood box! here is where i wish i had of taken more pictures but alas one hand on a saw, one hand on a beer, and one hand on a camera are too many hands doing to many things!:lolspin: so i had to drop one. here is a pic of the basic design.
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb130/coseal/030-1.jpg
pretty much lamminated plywood cut with a straight edge, a circular saw and flushed with a router. i like the exposed end grain of plywood. the different layers the different colors reminds me of my skateboards as a kid. or a meal at chipotle!:D i put on some white doors to kind of break up the whole wood grain effect. i have made plywood box stands before in the ADA style and although i loved the "grain" i found it a bit overpowering.

here is an example of a all wood grain stand i made some time ago..

Nice beginning you have going there! I like the idea of the exposed plywood edges next to the laminate face. One thing I learned while making furniture with exposed plywood edges is to plane the edges. I have used a joiner in the past to hit the edges of some baltic birch drawers. The edges came out nice and crisp. I noticed that sanding the edges made them look muddy once I applied a clear finish. I know you assembled everything already but next time you can give that a try. Any more specs on the tank? Lighting, Flow, SPS/LPS/Softies?

thanks sawdust! a joiner! thats a good idea! i have already stained and poly'd the stand and i do see what you mean by muddy. but i dont mind i think it still looks great! flow will be vortech and lighting with led's. going for a mixed reef.here is a pic of a section of my last reef going to try and duplicate this if possible!

tank is an ADA cube garden 120p overflow roughly 48x18x18 made with their version of low iron 10mm glass. here is a pic of the tank on the finished stand.

i have wanted an ATB skimmer since they hit the states. its a bit overkill for my system. but i had to have it!!:love2: perfect fit!
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb130/coseal/040-1.jpg
best build quality i have run across! and if the pump dumps it wont cost me a arm and a leg or a month to get another.

for the return pump i picked the tunze silence. i have always used eheim and really like them. but this go around went with tunze! so far so good! pump was a little noisey at first but quieted down overnight.

here is the layout of the sump. the skimmer is breaking in so i am hopeing most of those microbubbles will subside. i am planning on adding 2part pumps once i start adding corals to the tank. but still havnt made up my mind on which ones.
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb130/coseal/003-4.jpg

tunze osmolator for top off duty. i have used these before on previous tanks and they always performed flawlessly. the new magnet holder is a very nice feature and really makes install easy.
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb130/coseal/043-1.jpg

majority of my rocks will be dry fiji from bulk reef supply. i got around 40 pounds and plan on adding some liverock to the mix. this rock is nice! really nice shape.
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb130/coseal/001-4.jpg

going to go with a 2 island look. i think it fits this tank well.

I love the single arm. I'm usually one that likes symmetry in a build, but I think it works with your offset doors. You may consider flipping it so you have something offset on each end. Who knows, it may add a cool touch.

Very well done!

I like it but I gotta say, I'm frankly concerned with the strength of that stand. 3 verticals is all you're using with no supplemental pieces, 2x4's, etc., and the back isn't enclosed either.

actually the 3 uprights are 2 laminated peices of 1/2" ply giving me an inch of thickness there are also struts running the lenght of the box and an additional 3/4" strip "stud" with the three verticals. kind of hard to explain so here is a pic of one of the corners on the inside.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb130/coseal/012-2.jpg

the tempered hardboard sheet on the back covers the entire back of the stand. it is glued, brad nailed and screwed. the first couple stands i built i used 2x4's while they are great for overbuilding they sure do eat up alot of room. and to find a straight one at a home center is like hitting the lottery around here! lol

i had some dead spots running just 1 mp40 so i broke down and bought another vortech this time a mp10 esw this thing is pretty neat! like a mini version of the mp40. probally going to use the mp40 as master and this one slave.

when i initialy got my aquaillumination sol blues i was impressed! but once i got them over the tank i noticed that one unit had a more purple hue to it than the other. both units hooked up to the same controller. well i contacted the reseller who in turn contacted C2 development for me. after talking with a rep in the technical department at c2 i was made aware that cree has an acceptible variation of color difference. and since the serial numbers on my two units were 600 or so apart that was the reason i noticed the difference. so frustrated... i asked if it would be ok if i swap 4 led pucks out of one and into another and was told that would be no problem. keep in mind i just purchased these for 1100$ and had to take them apart within a month of use. the dissassembly was very easy and i got them swapped with no issue. i took this time to change my light tree up. i added a bar too make a hoop. there was 2 reasons for this. reason one - the bar had started to sag under the weight of the modules. and reason 2 i kept hitting my head on the bar overhang everytime i looked in that end of the tank lol! here is some pics

Nice clean set up!

Looking at the above sump picture I'm not sure the skimmer breaking in is going to stop a micro bubble issue. You do not have baffles between your skimmer chamber and the return section. Bubbles will continue to flow right to the return section - broken in skimmer or not. I like to do an over under over baffle from skimmer to return section.

yea the skimmer was breaking in in that picture. i do not have a micro bubble problem. i only run about 500gph thru the sump.

well.... the mp10 is down! lol it lasted about 30 seconds in the tank and then fell off. :(i tried it again same thing. switched modes same thing. it almost seems like reversed polarity when the pump is running.. i have been in email contact with a service agent from ecotech and they have parts inroute hopefully. really dissapointed that something this expensive does not work out of the box. kudos to kelly at aquariumspecialty for getting it to me so fast tho. they had it shipped the same day it was ordered.

on a brighter note! i got me a scopas tang in the mail! he is small! but looks healthy and seems to be eating ok. i have had other tangs in the past and wanted to try one thats not so popular in the hobby. i think they are beautiful. they have very subtle markings that really show in certain light.

Was the mp10 not running correctly or did it just fall off the tank? They can only be used on glass up to 3/8" in thickness...

coseal

it would run for like 30 seconds to a minute and just fall off. if the pump is off its fine. tank glass is a little less than 3/8".

i ordered a randalls shrimp goby and a zebra catalina goby last week. i have heard that the zebra variant of the catalina had a better chance in a reef system because they were more tolerant of the warmer waters. well my fish showed up! and in the box were a really good looking randall goby and a.... catalina goby! lol:furious:

also started setting up a frag tank this weekend. i had a small room we were using as a storage closet. cleaned it out... made a stand to match some ikea storage shelving i had. and wallah! "fish room" was born!:celeb1: lol

quick question for anyone reading this that have used kalk stirrers? does the water in the mix chamber stay cloudy all the time?

No, you can put the stirrer or pump on a timer. You may want to offset the time its mixing from when your dosing so your not getting a super saturated mixture. Assuming your not drip dosing 24 hours a day.

Nice design, good use of materials, simple & clean structure. For anyone looking at a similar design, you can by whats' called edge banding to cover the plywood edges...IF you don't like the look of ply sides (some people do). You use an clothes iron to apply it on, and it makes the wood look solid.

In the past, I wish I would have thought about putting electronics in a separate area...good idea.

Do you mind sharing how much the tank was, and shipping? The adgshop site only has small cubes.

so during routine maint last weekend i decided that i hated the way my wires were ran. i needed to clean a pump and spent 5 frustrating minutes trying to untangle and fish a wire with plug on it through a 1 inch hole. it sucked! i kinda did my plumbing in a hurry when i set the sump up and didnt like that either! i used alot of barb fittings and my flow suffered. i wanted a manifold to run some reactors and to make water changes easier. so i had the day off today and a full day to do it! so three trips to lowes! i can now easily unplug any pumps i want too for cleaning. got more flow for the tank and got my apex set up in a more permanent situation.(instead of draped across the bar with a cat 5 cable running down the hall to the router! lol ) got a deal on the apex a couple weeks ago from marine depot. ordered an digital ato from avast for the apex. here some pics!

first off... the rat nest!!!!! i thought keeping the electrics out of the sump cabinet was best!

Very nice build man. I love the separate control center compartment in your stand. Looks clean and great choice on the skimmer

forgotten all about this thread till you posted! I have some updated pictures tank setup has changed a lot.

this is about 8 months ago. lighting was 3 sols and 2 t5's on a custom rack

cut a hole in one of my doors and added a window to show off the electronics.

really simplified my system. was having way to many issues with the remote sump. so back to basics! herbie drain setup and a small sump.

set up a fluids station to keep an eye on things. ran out of room under the stand so beside the stand it went lol!

I ended up not liking the sectioned container and switched to individuals. much easier to clean..

I wanted to make some lighting changes and I was tired of the hoop setup. really wanted hanging lights again. caught a deal on a 4x54 sunpower and made some brackets to hang my sol's

ended up being way overkill! lol but I had plans for the sunpower.

modded my sunpower. using lumia 5.2 coralux 5driver board and a storm x for control.

We, tank looks sweet. Thanks for the update. You're very skilled at the DIY. What do you run for filtration on this tank?
-GFO?
-GAC?
-Anything else?

I do run gfo in a reactor and carbon passively in a bag. have been kicking around the idea to try zeovit. really not something I would want to rush into. I tried biopellets awhile back but didn't stick with them.

thanks for all the compliments!
