Welcome to the site Mike.

A protein skimmer is basically an instrument that promotes water quality by taking tank water by means of a pump and forming thousands of bubbles in a tube that constantly push the bubbles upward into a collection cup. The matter in the bubbles are organic compounds that are removed from the water before so it helps your water quality.

Hi Mike,

A protein skimmer is a type of filter used with saltwater aquariums. Tons of tiny air bubbles are pushed up through a column of water. Organics (waste) get caught in the bubbles due to the polar surface tension of water. A nasty foam froth is created at the top of the column and is collected as waste. One huge advantage of a protein skimmer is that the waste is physically removed from the water. They are great filters and very highly recommended.
