Hello all well i'll start by saying this wont be a very fast build. I hope by starting this now early on i will gain much help from all of you through my build. And i thank all of you now for that help ahead of time. Im going to try to have this be very pic heavy through the whole build phase and grow out phase.

To start out i will tell you a bit about my hobby experience. I started back in 07 with a 10g tank against the recommendation from my LFS to start out with at least a 30g. My 10g went as well as one could go but after 1 yr several hundred buck in a 10g tank and just wanting a bigger tank. I set out on a 30g drilled tank with a 20g sump and 5.5 refugium with and upgrade from pc lighting to MH and some pc suplements, and octo nw 110, ATO supplementing with just 2 part. I also had great success for about 2 years with mostly sps (15 or so) a few LPS and 3 clams ( one clam being the squami from 10g.) Then i had many poor life decisions in 2010 and i let my tank go to hell from lack of maintenance. I lost most all of my sps and lps but my clams were still ok. I paid a local hobbyist to hold my clams for a year for me( coming up this august, i will need an extention). And i set out on my newest upgrade.

This will be a list of what i already have or what I need.

SYSTEM

120 gallon tank 60 x 18 x 25 HAVE

100 gallon rubbermaid stock tank HAVE

50 gallon refugium. i want a cube type NEED

50 gallon frag tank. Longer and wider than tall NEED

55 gallon quarantine tank. HAVE

EQUIPMENT

I need almost all the equipment so i'll just put have on the 1 or 2 i have. : ( $$$$

Skimmer Bullet 3

skimmer pump Blue line 70HD

Return pump- Still not sure i want to get 1100GPH after head loss so have to wait and see where everything will be.

2x vortech 40w

Phos Reactor brand undecided

Carbon Reactor brand undecided

GEO calcium reactor

Ozone brand undecided I dont know much about them

Titanium heater(s)

QT Lighting heater flow. Dont know whole lot about QT's either.

Frag Lighting heater flow

Refugium lighting

ATO HAVE

MAIN TANK LIGHTING

2X 250W HQI Lumenmax elites HAVE

Duel 250w sunlight supply ballast HAVE

12 Cree LED's build it to Esto connectors light rack.

ELECTRICAL

Im bought a 100 amp subpanel to put into fishroom. My electician didnt want to use GFCI's because he says they have a tendency to trip for for no reason and he didnt want this expensive tank to crash. I told him its HIGHLY stressed on here to use them, and i told him i planed on dividing equipment to different breakers to lessen the effects of a trip.

He plans on useing 7-10 breakers, i think he's crazy and 5 would be more than enough, but we'll see.

FISHROOM

Fishroom is 9.5' x 12' so i should have more than enough room.

I will insulate room with R-13 foil face.

Im useing perma-board (cement board) and plan to tile the walls with 12x12 porcelain tiles.

If i can i will use a low profile drop ceiling, but i may have to use a 3-4 inch drop. My ceiling is only 7 foot to begin with. : (

I also plan to use a humidity sensing fan that will turn on at a givin set point that will exaust out side.

Well starting its half the battle. How bout some pics.

This is my 29g system its in what will be my new fishroom. The walls were a gross yellow orange and area was very cluttered. Theres my dog roxy too.

Next few steps.

Get electrician in to hook up all the juice.

Insulate

build stand

hang cement board

tile walls

get tank drilled.

I will expand on tank drilling now while im thinking of it. Im going to use beananimal's overflow system (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1541946 . Im going to have 3- 1.5'' holes drilled on the top left back side of tank, and build an external glass box on back of tank to house drain plumbing. In the tank im going to to a 60''x 1.5''x 6'' coast to coast over flow to take up as little space as possible in tank.

kinda like this.

Thankyou very much i was starting to think no one was gonna follow my build. Im hoping it will be a good looking tank I have stolen many idea's from some incrdible reefers here on RC.

Thankyou trent im hoping to get electrical ran in a couple weeks. It has been my goal from the start to do it right the first time, bought too much crap in the past i had to replace with items i should have bought from the start.

This is roughly my electrial plan, as said i will be running a sub-panel into fishroom, i plan to have system on 5 separate breakers. I have each set of out lets color coded to each breaker. Ive tried to set all the outlets above the main tank water line not that its reallly nessesary for all of them but wanted a clean look all in a row. I should have about 40 avaliable plug-ins which should be enough... :D

Red- First are the Front sides of tank. Vortech/lighting

Green- This will be for skimmer and Return for sure/ Misc sump stuff

Blue- Misc sump equipment/ Refugium

Orange- Refugium/ Frag tank/ quarantine tank on back wall (last Photo.)

Darker Red...- QT/ Hospital when needed

Other color codes.

Im thinking about having the Green/blue outlets connected to switches since they will be controling most of my equipment i will need to turn off for water changes.

yellow "x" box - Im debating weather to have them on left side of front tank.

Black "x" box- Or above sump under all the outlets.

Which one you think?

Then the big purple box in last photo is where the sub-panel will be.

Please let me know if you see anything that you would do different or looks unsafe. Once i tile the walls it would be a ***** to change anything.

Ive also made some equipment changes and left out a big one.

CONTROLER

Apex controler

I will no longer be getting the PM bullet skimmer, i have wanted to set a tone of do it right the first time so my wallet will be getting a lot smaller when i get the....

BK supermarin 200.

I decided that since the PM recomends a blueline 70hd at 290w and i want to match my return GPH to the skimmer intake it would mean another blueline 70hd at 290 watts.

I i went with the supermarin 200 with its 35 watt pump and matched the return with a water blaster 5000, at 60 watts( which i would use gate valve to slow flow down to 792
GPH and save some watts in process.)

I would save $370 a year in electrical, and have a kick... but skimmer.

Any thoughts on my electrical plan....

Im hoping it turns out good. Sept 2010 i set a finish date of Aug. 2011, but... the finishing of rest of basment took longer than i thought to get to this point. I keep upgrading my planned equipment which is a good thing for future inhabitants but not on my wallet.

End of 2011 is a goal to set. But we'll see.

Because of some great advise (flyyyguy) from another thread i started. Ive decided to add a switch to every outlet in the room which is 20. so i double my boxes and electritian will hook it all up tomorrow.

Well we got all the wires ran to boxes we still have to put in breaker box and hook it all up. the only changes were using gfci breakers instead of outlets. the electrician was surprised when he saw double the amount of blue boxes from the last time he stopped by. : )

<a href="http://s461.photobucket.com/albums/qq340/ludinano/?action=view&amp;current=utf-8BSU1BRzAxNzkuanBn.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq340/ludinano/utf-8BSU1BRzAxNzkuanBn.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Im also gonna wait on doing up the outlets and switchs until walls get tiled.

Ok its been awhile since I've updated.

I've completed the electrical sub-panel and have temp lights in room which help a a lot. Panel is fed by 60 amp breaker and fed by 6-3 w/ ground and not using the 100 amp breaker that came w/ panel but using another 60amp breaker.

<a href="http://s461.photobucket.com/albums/qq340/ludinano/?action=view&amp;current=utf-8BSU1BRzAyMTAuanBn.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq340/ludinano/utf-8BSU1BRzAyMTAuanBn.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

LIGHTING CHANGE

So I've decided against the MH lighting and am planning on going w/ 4 Aqua illumination LED's a pricey upgrade but electricity and bulb changing savings will help with that.... and the features with this fixture are amazing to say the least. This will be one of the last things I get in case prices go down or major changes occurs with AI or other LED companies.

On another not so happy update I've also changed how I plan to cement board and tile the walls. I've made this changed after more thought on what I had found with drain tile before I framed fishroom out. I have a plastic 3" mini wall that goes around my basement wall that leads to sump. This drain tile was filled with silt/ dirt that I had to shop vac out, I'm sure it took a very long time to get like that but if it fills back up 5-10 yrs to fill back up it would be way easier to cut 2' out of bottom of drywall then cut out cement board and tile,.to clean out track.

I will be using green board drywall for moisture resistance.

I have insulation and once I re-adjust my outlet boxes for drywall ill hang insulation and should have drywall done by end of month.

Thank you for anyone who is following and if u have any suggestions at anytime please chime in.

i ordered my 1 3/4 holes saws and 1'' bulkheads from glass-holes yesterday. Figured i'd drill the 3 holes for my bean overflow before i make the stand in case it breaks when drilling.

I will also drill the 55 i have sitting around that will be used for QT tank.

hey ludi, how far down from the trim or top do you plan on drilling your holes? my external will be the same width and height, just a bit shorter. dont forget to leave yourself some space for the silicone when getting the glass cut!

ludiNano

I bought all my fittings today for the bean overflow

Again plan to have a coast to coast internal weir 1.5'' from back of tank and 4-5'' tall and drill 3- 1 3/4 holes in back of tank and cover them w/ an external glass box.

This is the cardboard mock up of my external box and how i hope the 3 drain system will sit in it. I for got to get the 1.5 reduction to 1'' to fit my 1'' bulk heads and then the 1'' to 1.5 after bulk heads. Dimensions of the external box are 28''x5x5.

i will probably have to increase the height of the external box so emergency can have a little more room at top. I will probably increase it to 28x5x6

I dont have a set mark yet, but when i know i have the dimensions right for the external box then i'll go 1/2 way point of the external box. then from there i'll know how far down the internal weir will have to go.

Where are you suggesting to leave room?

you talking about how close to the side edge of the tank. Cause i plan to go a couple inches away from side.

thank you for looking torino.

I hope u link to some pics of your box when you get there please.

torino06

no i am saying for example you will have 2 side pieces (5x5), 1 bottom piece (28x5), and a front piece (27 13/16 x5) i cant remember if you want an 1/8 or 1/16" space on each side so you can get the glass between the 2 sides and get silicone between them.
i'll definitely get pics when i do mine!

ludiNano
04/18/2011, 01:59 PM
I get what ur saying now. Ive kinda just got to the point of seeing it drawn out too. I've got the target height down now, these are my new dimensions.

im aiming at 28 x 5 x 7.5 for the internal dimensions of box.

I wasnt sure how the box was to be put together. But this is what i think is right sides sit on top of bottom plate. Back sits on bottom plate but infront of sides. Right...

so...

Im using .25'' glass

i need the Bottom plate to be 28.5 x5.25 . so theres .25 extra on each side for side plates and .25 on back of bottom plate for back plate to sit on.

Side plates need to be 5 x 7.5

Back panel needs to be 27.5 x 7.25. the .5'' is taken off to fit the .25 on each side for side plates.

Now where am i to add the 1/16'' for silicone.

torino06
04/18/2011, 03:59 PM
why are you making the internal so wide? with 5 inches you don't need to use an external box. my internal was going to be 38x2x6 3/8
then you need to just subtract some length from your back panel. with 27.5 it will fit flush so you need 27 3/8 i believe.

ludiNano
04/18/2011, 04:05 PM
No I'm saying the inside of the external box

Drilled my first hole in a tank today. Drilled the side of my 55G that will be used for a QT tank. Wanted to get my feet wet before i attempt the display and external overflow box.

My father in-law, uncle, grandpa, and neighbor were all like your gonna drill your tank..... and its glass... u sure about that.... y dont u call a glass shop...( at 30 bucks a hole and maybe 9 holes I dont think so.)

Heres to them.

Here it is. The holes are larger then what they should be but it gives an idea. I should have 2'' room above the top of the up turned emergency drain.

<iframe src="http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/mini?mid=15ac2a5156721c5f70e594b0e896083f&etyp=sw&width=400&height=300" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" width="400" height="300"></iframe>

This one shows u can see the external box, im still not sure if i want to extend the internal box down or pant the back of tank inside box. Along with the rest of the back of the tank. I really want to have some sort of removable black backing so i can get more then one view of tank but still have that clean black look most of the time.

I got my glass in for the external box. The dimensions I went with are 28 x 4 x 7.5 with .25" glass.

I've got the holes drawn on the bottom plate and should attempt to drill it tonight.

hey ludo how are things going? i have made no progress. i thought i would try to drill the 3 holes today but ended mowing and doing yard work... i was wondering why though you were making the external box 7.5in high? good luck if you drill tonite!

ludiNano

Things are going good I drilled the bottom plate of my external box yesterday morn. It went great I had early any chip-out on the back side of the holes and stayed pretty close on center.

I decided on 7.5 height because it leaves me 2" above the emergency drain, I just didn't want some room above it to be safe.

I also picked up the green drywall for the fishroom. Now I just have to get off my but and hang the insulation so I can start drywalling.

I should be placing my order for my C to C internal weir soon. I'm ordering it out of Denver and am going to pick it up when I'm up that way on vacation in June.

Thanks for asking and hope u get some time to start yours.

My LFS recommended this company. I'll be looking at 2 pieces just under 60 inch long at 50 bucks a piece. And Denver is only about 20 min from Boulder,CO were we'll be staying.

Where u getting it in DSM?

I called the glass shop near me yesterday to see how much it would be for my internal. And to start she didnt even know if they could get black acrylic but is doing research. She said the first place she looked was too expensive. So im guessing she's looking at some of the same routs/ companies i am. The expensive part is the shipping, i can get the acrylic for 48 apiece but they have to frieght it being over 4' and thats $130 from denver. So thank god im going there in june.

I havnt decided yet where to drill the tank, when i get the external siliconed together, i'll just hold it up to where i know i want it and pick a spot low so i dont hear a waterfall into the external.

I got the Fishroom insulated yesterday too, now i just have to find the time to drywall, not much usually gets me more ****ed off then drywalling.

Thanks for the compliments torino.

Ok im almost done mudding, should be putting the 3rd and final coat on today.

But im looking to get opinions on painting. Ive already said I used the green dry all and want this thing to be the fort knox of moisture resistance.

I know i want to use kilz (or somthing like it) as primer.

--- But should i use the Premium, latex2 or just the orig. kilz.

---Then whats best to use over top of the kilz, just regular semi-gloss latex, or should i use an oil base paint?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes I got the 2 coats of primer done now I need to get the high gloss paint and get the window in there replaced. And I need to get the weld-on to join the two pieces of acrylic for the overflow still.

Made a sketch-up of my stand/ fishroom. The tank is built to hold my current 60 x 18 x 25'' tank, and will be able to hold an upgraded tank 72 x 36 x 25'' 280g tank. A 280 is as large as i could go without going wider or taller, and the length can only be a max of 72''. I figured down the road when the unevitable urge to upgrade came, i could just take old tank off and put bigger one on.

The stand hieght will be 41'' when i put 2 layers of 3/4'' plywood down.

<iframe src="http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/mini?mid=aafdca8dadc67694999891c577aea96&etyp=sw&width=400&height=300" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" width="400" height="300"></iframe>

I'll get a close up of stand tonight, and will be working on adding models of tank sump and QT to the room model

I'm hoping to get the window replaced and buy the wood for stand in a couple weeks.

hey thanks

so far every thing looks like it well thought out and done right.

I like the fact you are running all your electrical up high and are using green board to fend off the potential for mold build up in the drywall

maybe you already have it covered but consider dehumidifier for the room (or maybe an exhaust fan)

LudiNano, I am going to follow this thread for sure. I have a 125g waiting to be worked on, but unfortunately my construction job requires me to move around for now. How big of an internal overflow/ weir are you going to have? How thick is the glass you are using for the external overflow? This may be a good idea for my 75g I am in the process of building.

ludiNano

Thanks again steel. I going to run an exhaust fan and have it connected to some sort of humidity sensor.

I do have some questions about which humidity sensor to use? I'll post a link to the one I was looking at and cheaper ones I've seen used in builds when I get off. But if you have one to recommend I'd appreciate it.

I plan on shrinking down the size of the window in the fish room. And have it covered and a 4'' hole put in to run the exhaust through.

The internal weir will run the full length of back wall 60'' ( really like 59 1/4) and will only come out 1.5-1.75'' from the back wall. The external box is 1/4'' glass.

This is the humidity controller I was looking at. What i like about it is the sepparate contol of humidity and temp. I could plug the exhaust fan and a portable air conditioner into it.

---------------------------------------

I got the final coat of paint up, went with Sherwin Williams- mother of pearl - High Gloss.

I also decided to not replace the window with a window... but instead will have the window filled in with glass blocks and have an 8x8 block left out for the exhaust. I'm also struggling to find a masonry guy to do my 1 window job, had 4 guys come out and do quotes and only one guy call back with an estimate higher then what a window would cost, 1 guy I had to call back and said he's booked 2 months out which is why he didn't call me back..., the other 2 won't even answer my calls....I have the cash just sitting here waiting to pay someone.

On a better note I did buy an unused exhaust fan off an RC'er who chose to go another rout. Its a Fantech 125 FR.

Welcome Koralking- I hadn't thought of that, I'll consider it for the top part of stand w/ the 2x8's. I already have the bottom part screwed together and started gluing some of the legs together. Stand is done and in spot, still need to do A LOT of leveling since may basement floor angels away from the front of the stand. I did follow the rocket engineer build template. Stand is really a stand within a stand, outer dimension's are 72.5 x 36.5 x 37.5 which is the dimension's I will upgrade to years down the road but there are also supports within the 72.5 x 36.5 x 37.5 that are 60.5 x 18.5 x 37.5 to hold my current tank.

And in reality the stand now is only 33'' wide since I still have to build the front wall which will be 3.5'' wide up to what the leveled stand hight turns out... if that makes sense... I also will be adding 2- 3/4'' pieces of plywood on top on the stand bringing the total hight to 39''.

I also picked up Kilz complete oil based paint to seal the stand and should start on that in a day or two. I feel Ive gotten a ton done on this while on vacation, again thank you for viewing I hope to continue making good progress.

Alright I got the stand primed with kilz and top coated it with the high gloss enamel. I also got the stand leveled and in place. Then I built up the front wall, but I have to get more screws to attach the studs.

If I can get someone with a truck tomorrow I will try to get the 2 - 3/4'' prices of plywood for the top of the stand and the 2 x 8 for the header above the tank.

I have some good news and bad news.

Bad news is the clam I've had for about 4 yrs died, the guy I've had holding it for me told me yesterday. I'm getting the shell from him Monday, he said it had grown like crazy the last year he's had it.

Good new is i got the dry wall, insulation, plywood, and 2x10 ( cut down to 2x8.5) Wednesday. Ive got the plywood primed with 2 coats of the Kilz compete ( have a question about moving forward on painting in a min...) I was ready to start insulating the front wall and rest of the opening to fishroom when i realized i didn't plan on how to close off the back of the front wall since part of the front wall is part of the stand and they come together. I have to get more plywood to close it off and to put a bottom on the stand to store ATO water and other things.

Here I was making sure the plywood fit before i painted it.

<a href="http://s461.photobucket.com/albums/qq340/ludinano/fish%20room/?action=view&amp;current=IMAG0681.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq340/ludinano/fish%20room/IMAG0681.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s461.photobucket.com/albums/qq340/ludinano/fish%20room/?action=view&amp;current=IMAG0680.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq340/ludinano/fish%20room/IMAG0680.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Now remember I have primed both pieces of plywood.

But do I have to top coat both pieces of plywood individually or can screw the 2 pieces onto the stand then just top coat the two pieces as one???

Thanks for looking again everyone.

Looks good! Love the stand... I would assume that you could marry the two pieces of plywood and paint them as one. Don't take just my word for it though... Have somebody back that up :-)

Sorry bout the clam...

Thank you Jacob. I'm, hoping that I can paint the plywood that way but I'm still waiting for more confirmation its the wise way to do it.....

HINT HINT PEOPLE.. :spin2:

If you want to bring your truck by we can see but I might put you to work. I'm hoping the epoxy works out long term, after seeing that part of the basement floor done i REALLY want to get the rest of the floor done too. But I've put a hold on the rest of the basement to get the fishroom done.

Now what does everyone think about the plywood and not top coating in between them and just over the 2 joined pieces???

This is the bottom and back wall finished. Almost ready to put top on once the side that faces out the bottom is dry.

I also picked up some 2- part epoxy to top coat the top plywood and the bottom shelf.

The top is on the stand and I've started hanging a little insulation. A friend is coming over tonight and we will be carrying in the tank so I can clear out the garage for winter.

Maybe we'lll put it on the stand to see how it looks.

Thank you for your interest vietcu. I may not have it running but I still may be able to answer some questions.

Sorry for the lack of updates everyone, I was really rolling there for awhile and then... had to take a slow down. Unfortunately with Xmas and my busy time at work this progress level may continue.

I did get a little more dry wall up and was all set to get the front dry walled also but the header ( white board leaning against the stand) was twisted pretty bad and a big chunk chipped off trying to twist it back.

<a href="http://s461.photobucket.com/albums/qq340/ludinano/fish%20room/?action=view&amp;current=IMAG0739.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq340/ludinano/fish%20room/IMAG0739.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

And in this pic I'm gonna have some issues trying to screw the inside piece of drywall because of this beam, I have just under 3/4'' to work with and have to go aboot 6-7'' in to get to drywall.

<a href="http://s461.photobucket.com/albums/qq340/ludinano/fish%20room/?action=view&amp;current=IMAG0740.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq340/ludinano/fish%20room/IMAG0740.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Yea I still haven't gotten that building permit yet and its been a couple months since I did anything.... : ( I have finally made the floor layout the city wanted, I just need to set up a meeting. Good to hear from ya, I'm looking forward to your build getting started again.
