I would like to set up my spare 50 gallon as a fowler. I want some more unusual/cool stuff. The tank is 48 in x 11 in wide x 19 in tall

I'm guessing you're asking for stocking suggestions?

I'd go with dwarf lion sp., waspfish, small scorps (Scorpaenodes sp., Taenianotus sp.), stingfish (Inimicus sp.), maybe a Rhinopias sp. for something really spectacular.

Here's a link to some of our fish, so you can get some ideas (each pic is "clickable" and will open up additional photos):

Do you have all those fish in the 60 gallon? I like them all. I especially like the Hawaiian lionfish and the leaf fish.

namxas do you recommend that setup for every person who asks what they should stock their tank with? lol i would go with that option too dylan but be careful of the stings.

EDIT: wait so you have 15 fish in your 60g namxas? thought it was like 10ish.

In the 60, we currently have:

borbonius anthias trio
fuzzy dwarf
barberi lion
cheekspot scorp
caribbaeus scorp
male red-fin wasp
cockatoo wasp

Some of the others were slated to go into the 60, but we've changed our minds on some of them and sometimes the fish have required some growing out or have proven to be more timid feeders, so other arrangements were made.

When peeps want "different/unusual" I definitely do. As you know, Scorpaeniformes are our "addiction", and we're trying to spread the word about them as they're often overlooked. For peeps with smaller setups, there are certainly some good alternatives to clowns and damsels.

So I really like the fuzzy dwarf lion and the Hawaiian lion. Also the cockatoo waspfish,Yellow spot scorp, leaf fish and, redfin waspfish would all those be ok in a 50 gallon?

dylan- seems like it would be. also i hear leaf fish tend to be on the impossible-to-wean side but its possible to wean them to frozen, just challenging.

namxas- so what about pairs of scorps? i see you dont have any in pairs (or atleast have multiples of 1 scorp in the same tank) so im wondering is it jsut because you dont want to or do scorps do best when kept singly i.e. 1 fu or cockatoo or red-fin per tank instead of 2 (m/f or f/f or m/m) per tank?

dont mind the help here namxas lol. im not saying its impossible but fromt eh limited knowledge i know is that it takes dedication to wean them, its not one of those 'plus and play' fish haha. they are garaunteed worth the time tho.

Palmer,

Fu's will fight unless you have a bona-fide M-F pair. Frank mentions that for conspecific aggression in lionfish, fu's are about as bad as they come.

We've kept M-F fuzzies before, but I do recommend establishing a female first if not done concurrently. The male pushed the female around a bit, but nothing terrible, and no contact...just saying "i'm the sheriff in these here parts".

Yellow spots are small fish that often hide among SPS branches. If one shows up, that's a gem I'd keep on its own or with a Caracanthus. You'd never see it in a 50 gal with fast feeders.

We've been 1 and 1 in terms of weaning leaf fish. One specimen took to the stick, the other feeds on live food (enriched ghosties and guppies) from a small net. It recognizes the net and crutches/hops over to it.

Namxas- if you were to do your 60 gallon over again. What scorps and lions would you put in it?

Palmer- if we both decide on doing the same type of tanks we should get together or something. Haha send me a pm on the frag swap....

We kinda like it the way we have it. Then again, we have a LOT of setups, and these fish are our hobby/obsession, so we really don't worry too much about setting up another tank for a newby if we find something nice. That's one "problem" with sharing the passion with your wife...there's not really anyone to say "OK...put the brakes on the fish buying!" ;)

Our eventual goal is to have a collection of all the various lionfish and Scorpaeniformes that are available to the trade. We're constantly learning about their captive habits and care.

What are some tank mates that are ok with dwarf lions and scorps?

filefish, anthias, clowns, stuff like that. those fish <<<< would really only work with small-medium bodied lions/scorps from what i know and they need to be as large as the scorps themselves. i wouldnt put a 2" clown with a 6" lion but i would put a 4" clwon with a 4-6" lion. JMO

so like a maroon clown? would some type of blenny work?

I'd pick a mellower clown, not a maroon. Maybe consider a single tomato clown, if you like red. I think a pair would be even more aggressive/territorial than a single. Black sailfin blennies are nice.

you can keep a blenny with these guys? hmm didnt know that. right now i have a maroon with the niger and havent had problems but havent added a fish recently lol.
