I checked the Reef Octopus skimmer thread but didn't find the answer to this question: how many inches of water does your skimmer sit in? I've been told to keep it in between 4.5-6". Any thoughts?

No one wants to give input?

Depends on the model but I believe it is at least 1" above the highest point of the pump

i take it by your tank size you got the 1000? I run my 1000 in about 7 in of water. I tried running it at 6" before and the pump would suck air from the surface. 7" is a perfect level. My skimmer pulls straight nog.

Yes, it's the 1000 model--I'm setting it up this weekend. Good to know 7" runs better than 6". So, it sounds as if you're happy with it?

Not sure how sitting in 6" of water the pump would suck air, perhaps measuring differently? Measuring from the base of the pump I have mine in about 5.5" of water, anything more than 6-6.5" and my my 1000 will overflow.

Ok, thanks for your input too. I'll play around with it this weekend and see what works best.

I suggest anywhere between 5.5 and 6" sump depth for any of the SRO/XP skimmers.

Ok, thanks a lot for the responses. I've heard great things about these skimmers so I'm excited to get it going. Right now I'm mixing a batch of water to do a change as well as add more to the sump. Tomorrow...! :)

I have the sro 1000 and you need in at least 3 inches of water or 5 inches at the most or it will over flow. I have been messing with mine since day one and had to raise it up more and more untill i could get it from over flowing.

I received my SRO-1000 yesterday and started it today. Running in 7'' of water and its way to much: overflowing. I need to descend it at about 5. Heard you can put it down back a bit in the water after a few weeks...

Coralvue suggest that overflowing may be due to substance mixed in the water. I got mine overflowing full time since it breaked off, full valve open, in 5 1/4" of water. I'm suspecting kalkwasser as the cause and just raised it at 4,5" and still testing.

Do you dose kalk regularly over the course of a day?
