Hey all, just wondering how to go about making a mini automatic top off for my soon to be 2.2 gallon pico reef. Never made an ATO before so any pointers or help would be great!

Do you have a controller? Easiest way is to use a couple float switches and once level goes low you tell controller to kick a pump on in your top off water.

No, don't have anything as of yet, just looking to find out what I need and how to make it first. Is there a good topic on here that shows or explains on how to do this?

For a 2.2 Gallon Reef, I suggest you keep a Nalgene bottle full of DI water next to it, when the tank is low, pour some in.....no sense in nuking that one out for such a small tank. Float switches, relays, and reservoirs sitting close by or in the tank will end up being an eyesore and take away the beauty of a tiny reef sitting on a bookshelf.

I don't think there's a float switch small enough to put in a 2 gallon tank without looking ridiculous. If the tank has a false back/overflow return or a sump it might be possible using one of the off the shelf systems like a JBJ ATO.
I've actually seen one: this is from one of our sponsors: http://www.avastmarine.com/ssc/do/product/Top-off-Kit

Thanks for the link Sk8r. Had never checked out that sponsor's site and they have some nice equipment...
The one you linked is just the sensor so you'll still need a pump and tube holder too.
true: I use a mj 1200, but I have to lift mine from the floor. A smaller pump for a same-shelf ATO reservoir, which can be cleverly disguised as a vase on a bookshelf. Just be sure the glaze is food quality.

Yeah thanks for the link Sk8r. and i guess you all are right, It seems dumb to even worry about it, I'll just keep continuing keeping a thing of water handy. Thanks!
