Is beach sand from the Gulf Coast safe?

I am setting up a new custom 40 reef. I will be in Florida soon & I know of a beach with baby powder like white sand. I was thinking of bringing bringing it back for my main display. But, dont know if thats a good idea. Can sand harbor disease? Is the sand ok considering the oil spill?

It can harbor all sorts of nasty stuff and if you plan on having a reef tank with lots of flow you will have a snow storm with sand that fine.
I would advise against it.

If you get sand from a smart location it is fine. However, if it is as fine as you say it is you will have constant sand storms.
