View Full Version : 10g tank LED fixture help

I want to build an LED fixture for my 10g rimless tank that sits on my desk at work. I have a T5 HO fixture on it now but I want to be able to put anything I want in the tank and have very good/fast growth.

Are there places that sell kits? Where? How much would this probably end up running me for a 20 x 10 LED fixture that not only makes the corals glow but also make them grow just as fast as MH would?

Thanks.

For a 10g tank it may be easiest to go with a single PAR 38 bulb with 60 or 80 degree optics. Just find an attractive swing arm desk lamp and adjust the height in order to get the coverage you desire.

Take a look at this thread for details...

For my 10 gallon i recently went with par38 leds. They were only 30 degree optics so i bought 2. These are the best thing i ever bought for my tank. Everything pops.

Thanks everyone.

Would you recommend the 12K or the 20K? Both are $88 - One comes with 3 blues, one white, and the other comes with 3 white and 2 blues.

Also, they said if I purchased 5 of their $1.49 80 optic lenses I could put the lenses on each LED giving me full coverage without having to purchase (2) PAR38's.

Total cost with the 80 optic lenses for each LED comes to $95.00 plus shipping.

My wife has been asking me what I want for my birthday for a month now and I keep telling her corals but I think I just found what I want.

What do you guys think? What do you think about these 80 optic lenses they're talking about? The guy I was talking to didn't have the first clue as to what type of lights will grow corals so I'm bringing the questions here.

Thanks in advance for everyone helping me narrow down what I will order.

You won't be disapointed, those are the same bulbs I have over my tank and I love them.

What size tank do you have? I'm putting it over a 10g. What can I grow in the 10g with one of these lights?

If I upgrade to a 20g and use the 10g I have now as a sump, could I still use the same bulb?

I have 6 of them over a 120g, see picture below.

As for what you will be able to grow, take a look at the thread I linked above and you will find many people that are keeping everything from zoas, to SPS and clams in PAR 38 lit tanks.

Of course you could use the same bulb if you upgrade to a 20g, you would probably just need to add another. That is one of the nice things about PAR 38s; if you need more light just add another bulb. This is exactly what I am planning to do once I start adding SPS; adding two more bulbs with 40 or 60 degree optics to spotlight the areas that need extra light.

Hope this helps.
