My alk is 3.5 but my CA reads close to 600 on a new salifert kit. Wouldnt it tend precipitate at this level?

I would recommend that you allow your calcium level to drop. High levels in calcium may not cause precipitation by itself. Many salt mixes have levels above 500 ppm calcium at a salinity of 1.0264. It is the increase of pH over 8.6 in combination with high alk levels and perhaps high calcium levels that induces precipitation.

Lots of people have reported calcium levels that high without precipitation, but I agree that letting it drop is a good idea.

Mine has been higher with no precipitation or issues.
