If you want to understand it, avoid it, treat it, read the new sticky. Thank Snorvich, who has carried this in his blog a while, but is now publishing it in hopes of saving a few tanks. For those who don't know---ich is an extremely prevalent parasite. Buying a fish is like rescuing a cat or dog from 'off the street'---would you be optimistic about fleas, and just bring him into your living room? Not if you've ever experienced them. Ich is a lot like that. We recommend a 4 week quarantine for observation of the fish, and if he starts scratching or breaks out in bumps---then you treat with hypo or copper. Never, ever, ever treat any fish in your display tank or sump. If these marine pests get in, they infest your tank sandbed, filter, rock, you name it, and it is a real pita (8 weeks without fish in the tank) getting them starved out.

So if you're new, read all of this, and believe it: marine fish have some trouble with bacterial infections, etc (which is why you don't just assume ich: the treatment for those are different and can't be given with the ich treatment!)--and other parasites, such as flukes, cirolanid isopods, etc, but---ich is THE most common, and can be invisibly situated in the gills.
