I need to reduce the flow on my mag 12 a bit, and I just want to make sure I understand this right so I don't screw anything up... you just adjust the ball valve, right? I'm assuming this doesn't put any pressure/extra wear tear on the pump? Seems simple in theory just want to make sure I don't ruin the pump...

Golden. Mag's are like tanks, they can take back pressure a lot better than other pumps. I have a 12 that I've throttled back about 30% for the past 2 years with no issue.

Correct, only put valves to reduce flow on the output side.

yes it does put excess stress on the pump havent had one fail yet though.. I have another output on mine going to my refugium so it doesnt put any extra stress on the pump and also feeds my refugium

+1 it is safer to put a diverter t going back into your sump with a ball valve.

You're doing it right, just throttle back with the valve. You can also plumb a manifold to use the extra flow to power any reactors.

Throddling back your return will not harm your pump... many pumps (not sure about the Mag) use less eletricity throlled back.

restricting your pump intake will however cause some serious harm

Thanks guys... the valve is definitely on the output... I was pretty sure I had it plumbed right, but have never actually done it before...
